Is this normal?

Ok, finally got upgraded to 1024 ADSL with TelCon. I must say so far its been far from a good experience.

The line got upgraded on Friday. Over the weekend ran at about 100-110Kb/sec constantly which I can live with.

Come Monday morning the line speed just varies all over the place for local and international sites. Sometimes its 160kb/sec sometimes 900kb/sec sometimes 400kb/sec. In the evening though seems much better.

I have tried 3 ISP accounts (Mweb, Web Africa unshaped and Telkom test account) and get the same result of the line speed jumping all over the place using the Telkom speed test.

Is this normal?

I logged a fault with TelCon who said they have tested the line and it is fine.

Any ideas to what maybe be going on?

Give it a few more days, if it's still the same then have them send out a techie during one of the working days. Could be something faulty on your DSLAM

Surely if someone is paying for 1024 (best effort service, of course) you expect to get speeds towards the higher end on a more constant basis. All I want to know is it normal for the line to jump all over the place speed wise every 30 secs. Reasonable question.

My guess is your line got set WAY over 1024 somehow - the extreme spikes you're experiencing might be simply due to the fact that other people are using the lines at those times, and thus your connection is slightly more congested.

Yeah it's possible, sometimes it's stable sometimes it's erratic. But it shouldn't be erratic every single day, you should have a few days of stability as well. But during business hours generally you run a little slower

I don't expect to get the max 1024, but I would imagine the line to run fairly constantly close to 1024, and slow down a little due to congestion and other external factors. But what I am seeing is very erratic behaviour.

I also find that my results vary a lot on the HTTP Telkom speed test. It only downloads 500KB and a fraction of a second makes quite a difference on such a short download.

The FTP test is a lot more accurate, as it uses a much larger file (10 meg). You don't get a graph type display, but as long as the file downloads at roughly 110KB/s your line is fine.

International downloads are obviously subject to congestion, network faults etc. and that's not something Telkom will investigate.

On the longer FTP download it varies betweeon 30Kb/sec to 80Kb/sec, erratic still...

Any speeds above 100kps is a bonus! But what is the use of having 1024kps if accounts are capped? Or do you have unlimited account. Do you know something that we dont know?
