Just wanting to know if everything is ok with my car. When driving normally or stand still dont see any smoke out the exhaust but when I put foot even at 120-130kmph I can see smoke comming from the back of the exhaust. Is this normal for a car? Its a Corsa Sport 160is 2000 model.

Any smoke from a car is not good.

If it's at idle it's the valve seals. If it's at higher revs it's rings. I'm sure your Corsa has it's fair share of KM's on it ? Just have the rings replaced.

Nah finance finishs at end of year at which case gonna give to fiance or sell and get a new car. Its about 160000km. Just strang though. Goes like a bomb just when foot is flat is when the smoke comes.

Check and see at what revs it starts happening. If it only happens top end no matter the revs it's something else. If it's high revs in any gear = Rings.

Pitbull is right: Any smoke is no good! and the above too.
'Something else' maight be the fuel system is overfueling at FOT (fully open trottle). and it goes like hell but very heavy on fuel right?

Black smoke - burned oil based
Broun smoke - NOx based, seen under heavy load (say up-hill) and hot engine
this one is present to all cars but not in huge amounts.
I take it you see the smoke in the mirror from the driver seat:D It's a lot!
White smoke - water based (not for diesel!)

Thanks for replys. Its only at about 5000rpm start to see the smoke and its pitch black but "evaporates" very quickly. At idle you can see slight white smoke now and then. Also got a very strong smell that doesnt quite smell the same as other exausts, its hard to explain. (its petrol smell mixed with exhaust plus is quite "sweet"). If i drive long distance or between 60-80kmph I get 500km to a 45l tank. If I drive anything above 120 and is in normal traffic I get 380-420km per tank. And I do find if driving at 120-130kmph and put down foot smoke comes (that I can see from my mirror) and the car accelarates alot for a small 160i even at these speeds).
From what people have said sounds like rings and the fuel system. (Side Note : Car used to not idle on odd occations and then juist return to normal - sometimes would last a couple minutes other times a whole day, now it always idles fine but occasionally will "rev" - Go from 800-3500rpm then back down and continue this cycle until I switch the car off and back on again. Last thing when I switch off the ignition "sometimes" the car doesnt switch off immeditaly and have to wait about 5 secs before switchs off)

Black smoke = too much fuel.
Grey smoke = burning oil.

I'm not familiar with the fuel consumption on the Corsa's but I drive an Etude 160iE and I get 650km on 50 liters combined cycle. About 575km on 50 liters at 140km/h.
So by the sounds of it your engine is being over fueled and running very rich.
The fact that you can smell petrol while it's running only reinforces the assumption that it's being over fueled.
160000 km isn't a lot for a modern engine if it hasn't been thrashed.
Between all the cars I've driven they only start to show major signs of wear after about 250000km.

My suggestion would be to have someone look at the fuel system first before you think about replacing rings or overhauling the engine.

Just a question, do you normally wait for the car to reach its normal temperature before you do flat out accelleration and revs above 3000rpm ?

@Paul_S:
Thanks for the correction! My mistake. Had a tough day yesterday.

Gray to blue smoke = oil burn
Black = overfueling

The smell is probably from the Catalityc Exhaust which with the ovefueling is probably dead or at least heavily sooted by now. So is the O2 sensor (

Why Rings? Unles money is no object...leave the engine ALONE men :mad:

Has the car been modyfied in any way? Reprograming the ECU 'Chip" or has a "Hot engine" you don't know about?
The idling problem is notorious on the Corsas as it's the foulty ECU's or ECU program goes heywire.( they are made & programed localy, so...you know who...) If you can get a dealer to fault-code read the car or try new ECU on it...this may be the answer

My 'suggestion'...leave the thing alone & get rid of it when your finance expires. Try to use it as a deposit...;)

How do I clean or is there anything I can do about the exhaust? I think the car was reprogrammed because it gives alot more performance than any other car I have driven thats a 160i especially on hills but cant be sure. What do I need to get to stop the over fueling? (Like I said would like to keep car for fiance when its paid up). BTW thanks for all advice. PS: I have used LRP once on it (as the unleaded was finished at all the stations I could get to with what petrol I had left but I didnt notice any change in the car what so ever when using LRP)

Dynotune

Send it for one. My Colt Clubcab needs oneas it's very rich on fuel. That is never a good thing. You can burn a piston to dust if you leave it like that.

All you can do is to get it red hot and burn the leaving sh#t out of it...meaning to drive to CapeTown (read long) without overfueling it though!

Get it reprogramed back to NORMAL. You may not want to drive it after that :D couse it will be like a 'donkey cart' comparing to now. Look guys...more performance needs more fuel (and not only that). end of story! Problem is, the "tune up" people not allways do a complete job due to lack of funds from the owner. If you want a racing car, be prepared to pay for it!

(Like I said would like to keep car for fiance when its paid up). BTW thanks for all advice. Let's hope you follow some of it :D & sell it.

You may be didn't but your CAT sure did! LRP is a NO NO for any vehicle with CAT (catalytic converter)

There you have it folks.
