Wherever the D3C0D4 ring leads me!!
I ordered ADSL, pestered the support people and finally today the techy phoned me with an installation date.

Here's my problem: When I ordered, I stated that I wanted to do a self installation. The way I understood it was that all the techy had to do was unplug my current line and plug it into the DSLAM but the techy says that he has to come round to install a new line.

Is this right? Could it be that my current line is too old and they need to upgrade it? Or has said techy just given me some BS?

Telkom upgrade a line? Nah - sounds like BS to me.

Our lines are so corroded that the techie is up a pole in our street at least once a week, more often daily. The poles are wooden, splintered and unstable as well.

my advice toxin if the okes wants to come around let him

even pay 200 bucks or whateva but get the line done
dont mess around or you could wait months and months

rather pay the money whore (telkom) than wait months for adsl

i mean its only 400, that will give you peace of mind and faster service :)

plug in an adsl modem and see if it sync's
who knows your line may be working

As it turns out Carlhead was right. :)

Telkom came yesterday to "upgrade" the physical copper line. So after waiting only three weeks (which is not bad considering), I thought that my ADSL days were about to start...... well it didn't. Not just yet.

After the upgrade was complete the techy tested the line. Making a call from the phone seemed to work fine but when we tried phoning our number to see if it connects we got through to someone else entirely.

The techy phoned Telkom to log the problem and if it hasn't been resolved by the time I get home he has given me a number to call for escalation on Telkom's side.

For interest sake has anyone had a similar problem?

That happened to us a few years ago. Apparently they had ****ed something up at the exchange.

What rubbish! Paying for Telkom to install your ADSL does not give you faster service.

not really geek

a money whore like telkom gets x amount of adsl installs a day

which would be first on their list
the ones where there is a charge for installation
then the self installs

think about it :)

also how would a person do the copper changing trick that telkom do?

i mean all of us know how to work with telephone lines :) so it would be easy to route that copper wire hahahahha

You pay the same for a self install and a normal install.

You have to open the Telkom box to connect the new copper line to the box. I don't think Telkom want people fidling in there connecting illegal lines.

Also I don't think most clients are really willing to climb up a ladder to run lines etc. and besides they're Telkom's lines... they kinda rent them to you, so from a legal point of view it's illegal.

Nope. For self installation all you need to pay for are the microfilters. You do have to setup your modem/router by yourself as well.

PS: Come to think of it you need to have your own modem/router as well. But if you don't get the Telkom contract you need to get it anyway. Which is what I did.
