Hi all,

I was just wondering if it is 100% safe to let those "Im from Microsoft, you PC has a virus let me install something on you PC" scams on a Virtual Environment and make them purposely install that software to lock your (VM) Hard drive without affecting the Host PC.

The whole point is to make them feel that they have just been outplayed.

Why would you wanna do that? I would play dumb on the phone and pretend that I don't know how to follow their instructions until they get fed up of me and hang up ;)

Yep you should be fine. Lots of people have already done this:

Haha. Do they just follow a set script? Do they actually make things up as they go along?

Wait... was he pronouncing Linux correctly? I always read it like line - ux. Or is that just the British way?

Some say Lie-nix, others say Lin -nix, then other others say Lin-nux, and other other others Sudo :D.

As long as your VM doesn't have access out to other computers, go for it.

What I do is tell them to hold on while I switch my PC on, I then put the phone down somewhere and see how long they hold on for. :D

anyhoo, back to what the OP asked, i have wondered the same, if im running windows in a VM, can it somehow infect my pc?

I just tell them I have a Mac. Then when they say they'll transfer me to the Apple Dept, I hang up. Or else, I just say "hang on" and put the phone on the desk and go away for a few mins

Play stupid, my high score is 32min before the guy lost his cool
