Just to go against the grain here, is it my imagination or has ADSL become slightly quicker over the past few weeks (kind of since this forum opened!) Probably just my imagination!

yeah dude, i dunno hay...mine seems slow as usual...but no doubt the fools from telscum is working on the problem...i think this forum might have started summin they didnt expect...

eat my (_(_) Telscum!

Mine is almost completely dead...

RIP South African ADSL.

Lol I've had adsl for 3 days now and it seems as if mine has just died this morning. It seemed quite ok for downloads and stuff. No good for gaming though - or maybe my settings are incorrect. Today I can't even get into my gaming website, never mind play a game or two. They really need to do something.

Guys,
I am the first to agree with you all that the concept of a CAP is not right, but what we should be doing in our up and coming meeting with Telkom is to get an understanding from Telkom as to WHY they feel it necessary to have in place this limitation and the bandwidth shaping.
Is it really that they don't have sufficient international B/W for users than burn up the bps?
And on that subject I must admit to finding it difficult to understand how any user can burn through their CAP in three days as some have reported. However I am not a gamer so my knowledge as to required bandwidth for this is limited.
I use my adsl for business purposes and find that I rarely hit 80meg in a day, in fact so far this month I have only log 0.8Gig.
(Anybody want to buy some B/W off me[:)]
I have also found the service to be reliable and to match my expectations for the service. Yeh thats right!!!!
I was warned that the service would be slower during the day, as it is but in the evening and W/E I have no complaints and if you do a TEST at about 7am then one logs about 350k speed.
Now I am pretty fanatical on the set up of my PC and LAN but running Win2K with SP4 with a 500M PIII I really havn't experienced the problems that I read about on this site.
So just maybe, the problems that some users are experiencing could be influenced by their PC setup.
Don't throw things at me, I am not protecting Telkom at all but just trying to be realistic.
I was in the Telecommunications/ Network industry until recently, so I have had MANY years of dealing with Telkom, or SAPO as they used to be, and I can assure you that their monoplolistic culture is so ingrained in them that we can only do ourselves no good by treating them as a bunch of wallies.
We need to understand their issues and fears and then delicately negotiate around them.
One could correctly argue that it shouldn't be necessary, but until the Govermnent allows true unfettered competition it will be necessary.
Pressure on them does work (sometimes slowly) as those of you that have been in the IT industry for a long time will recognise.
Let's complain but it must be constructive, well thought out and balanced and we must understand and take cognisance of Telkom's commitments to the Financial Market and it's shareholders.

the larger the capping size Telkom gives...the more we'd pay : Think about it

Hi grahambell,

My setup is a dual P4 Xeon 3.06GHz with Hyperthreading and 1gb of memory. I've tried fresh installs of Windows 2000 and Windows XP and tested from that. I've still experienced the problems I've posted here. I've also tested using dialup and using the router to initiate the connection.

Maybe it's the Marconi router that's the cause of some of these problems.
