Well my parents want adsl.

So i assume tomorrow i can walk into telkom, order a 384k line for R152 pm, tell them its self install, go home. Pay nothing

They do their part, tell me to go in and get a FREE modem!

I then complete the self install, have my lovely free modem, then pay R152 extra on the phone bill at the end of the month!

No other costs???????

You need data from an ISP.

they obviously alreayd have a telkom line

and i have a ISP account that i will share with them!

it sounds too good to be true, telkom give you a free router!!!

so why don't i just apply, get it cancel in 1 month and get a router for R152?

Well if you take the R152 option, that EXCLUDES the ISP part so you're gonna have to buy your bandwidth from somewhere, everyone here will recommend Web Africa or Open Web.

The free router is NOT too good to be true, it IS true :D :D believe it or not. Just order your ADSL, tell them you're doing self install and get your order number. Walk into any Telkom shop and ask for the router. They probably will only ask you for your phone number, not even the order number, wait 5 minutes and walk out with your new router.

That's what I did. They then charged plus minus R 860 extra to my account as 'sales'. I had to call and query and they credited me.

there's a cancellation fee.. look for it on the telkom website... its in the very fine print section...

how long should I wait between placing the order and then going to collect the router? 1 day seems too long.

what about the techie who has to come out and sort out you line at the local exchange??

Don't they network lock the router or something? I suppose not, seems you can get any ISP... I Think Cybersmart does tho. Flip :(

Mweb does as part of their free modem offer.

I was told 3 days ago that after 1 Aug no free modems....but who knows wit telskum!!!

well i applied, confirmed the costs, and all the forms we signed had NOTHING on them about cancellation and return of the router!

I have dsl myself, i'm just setting up my parents too, they will share my telkom account as all they do is email

So, why would you want to pay R152 and then cancel to get a free router? You want the ADSL don't you, if you didn't what use would you have for the router?

Those are cheap routers than every second ADSL user has, the the resale value isn't very high.

i'm not actually going to do that!

i even have spare routers at home , just not wireless ones

I just found the following under the DSL Free modem Bundled offering Terms and Conditions:

"If the customer cancels the service before the 24-month contractual agreement period has lapsed, the customer will be penalized according to a sliding scale for early cancellation penalties, which is equal to R62.19 VAT excl multiplied by the outstanding months of the contract which will be levied on the customers final account."

So, it doesn't appear that the modem is free after all.

Thoughts anyone?

You still get the modem free on month to month.

Who says you have to sign a contract? Take it month to month ;) with self install :p
