Is Uber Cost Effective

Compared to what?
Buying a car. I have a car.

But I'm moving up to JHB next year. I'm currently in the North Riding area, going to Rossbank when required is about R200 which isn't often.

Being this side will be purely for work, not much socializing.

Factoring in maybe another car for 60k, insurance, petrol etc.

Is Uber more worth it? I haven't had an issue getting one this side to get around.

All depends how far and how often really.

Youll unfortunately need to do the math for yourself.

Yeah I'll only know that once I get settled in.

But 2-3k a month on Uber isn't that bad vs a car?

Well it is when you consider the car has value after the fact when it's paid off and no longer costs 2-3k every month.

Uber is more like a perpetual lease.

I've been charged twice in winter due to low demand, and if you're stuck in traffic the price can exceed the estimate. Besides that you can definitely save but the convenience of using your own car is something I'm too used to.

On the other hand you don't have to maintain and insure the Uber vehicle or fill it with petrol and have space to park it.

Uber has always been helpful and I've never had any major issues.

Also been stuck in traffic here in JHB, but the fare estimate kinda accounts for it.

Exactly why it's entirely circumstantial to how much and how far you need to travel.

We've largely replaced our second car with Uber as it was standing around doing bugger all.

Cost me R212 to use Uber to ORT the other day.

Can't beat that.

Uber to Sandton Gautrain, and then to ORT would cost more, and a lot more inconvenient.

Taking your own car to ORT, including the parking, costs substantially more.

IMO Uber can really replace a second car.

Their complaints department is very quick to respond, but I also got a 'sorry nothing we can do response' when my Capitec discount didn't kick in.

Uber can be convenient if you rarely need to travel, but I like the freedom of having a car. I don't think trying to get some action on a date in an Uber car is a good plan.

I can see that being an issue if you stay with other people

From my usage, Uber is readily available unlike Durban so that's why I'm considering it as an option.

I like the train, cool going underground to a "subway" which ends up right in the airport.

One of the only ways Uber is cheaper is if you have car repayments every month. If your car is paid off off and you're only paying for petrol, insurance and maintenance then it's hard to justify Uber as a daily unless you absolutely do minimum mileage.

I usually rent a car when I go up to JHB for work, this last time I decided to only use public transport (Uber and Gautrain)

The cost per day on a rental is R200 + Petrol and then I still have to reserve the deposit on my credit card which is a risk to me and an annoyance.
Using public transport I could get away with R100 per day, its not always 100% as convenient and I ended up catching a lot of lifts but I wont rent again.

People in SA are locked in to this mentality that you need two cars, overseas its not nearly as common.
The cost per month on my car here is almost R6k (R3000+ R700 + R2000) thats without parking, fines, cleaning etc
Thats a lot of Ubers.
