since yesterday I took out my blackberry sim card and cashed in my talking points for data bundles, inserted the sim on my modem and tried visiting sites like freshwap and rapidlibrary so I get redirected to this vodacom web page "http://www.vodacom.co.za/personal/main/webrestriced" and i'm like saying to myself :wtf:, Is it only me or is everybody experiencing this?

maybe it is, I will try it on my other vodasim

Weird one, for sure not a 'feature' of any kind. Will get the Engineering guys to check it out.

Please call 155 and check your SIM is provisioned for the Internet APN.

Last time I checked its illegal for any ISP in SA to filter any sites on the internet

Really? Which law is that? Won't you post the relevant law you 'checked' please?

I would expect a Vodacom employee to know this, I suggest reading through your ICT law once you are aware of what is in that document we can chat. Basically if you block any site on the internet for what ever reason without a court of law instructing/approving you to do it is illegal. Why do you think the Film and Publications board have been trying for years to pass a filtering law on ISP's for copyright in South Africa.

Throttling of bandwidth is legal though based on website or type of traffic.

Highly suggest you get familiar with your ICT Law.

Im sure you can get away with it until someone notices and takes you to court ....

Since you recently 'checked', please post the relevant law, section and paragraph. Last time I 'checked' we don't have a specific regulation called "ICT Law", so the 'document' you mention does not exist. It would therefore help immensely if you can post the section you refer to.

But somehow I suspect we're not going to see an actual post but more vague assertions?

I would suggest you learn what the ISPA is before just randomly quoting from their site.

They are not the representation of internet conduct, but rather a body of isps. More correctly they are an entity that represent their members and how they should conduct themselves. They are not the internet police or enforcement body, so there is little relevance in quoting their rules over vodacom.

@ Jannie.

What are you suggesting ?

Can you confirm if Vodacom actually restricts any websites... ?

Ps. Not everybody is educated and familiar with the legal implications between ISP's and their customers !

Relevance?

"Illigal for an ISP to actively intercept or monitor communications", is that not what Vodacom is doing whilst irritating the abusers? or is there another method?, I'm just curious that's all

Indeed. :)

But in this case GoofySmurf states he personally checked the law, so it'll be great if he can just post the link.

For the record, I personally also don't think ISP's should try and police content, outside of some kind of opt-in system. (like our adult content management system).

According to GoofySmurf our ACM is actually illegal, as would many systems like Cybernanny, etc. be. So, obviously, I'm a bit concerned.
