IS vs SAIX for Skype

Could anyone that actually tested international Skype calls on both shaped SAIX and IS please comment on the differences.

Which is better?

That would be an interesting exercise. Everybody talks about the latency of the IS connection but how does that compare with the efforts of telkom to kill skype?

I have tested both and it seems much better on SAIX,

IS - Due to larger latecny as well as port shapping often qualit is so bad its not worth making the call as well as the echo and the wait for each work is huge

SAIX - if it goes through its good, but half the time it does not go through.

So it 1 half of the other etc !

Wickedweasel, your whole point on IS is flawed.

From adsl account side, IS is much better than SAIX shaped accounts for skype, even tho IS go via satellite and got higher latency.

This is a raw fact, IS SKYPE is consistent, SAIX skype would work ok now and then, and not at all working most of the time.

Could all SAIX users, who is using skype/voip internationally please post here. There is a reason 500 SAIX users, use our FreeVPN or LowPing VPN for skype/voiping, because SAIX is useless.

I have no problems speaking to my brother in LA using my 512 IS ADSL account. Most the time the latency is quite good aswell but hey, YMMV

Thats what I expect, IS skype/voip is great, specially compared to saix.

I have used both.

Latency of 300ms difference means buggerall for VOIP, its not what makes it or breaks it.

Its the bandwidth flow thats important, and what breaks that, is shaping. While IS claims their adsl offering is currently shaped, in reality so far, its not.

It is shaped-SAT3 vs unshaped Satellite...

unshaped bandwidth will always, and have always, been better than shaped bandwidth.

Trust me, you wont notice if the person on the other end takes 300ms longer to respond...you will notice if the response doesnt come through clearly.

SAIX = works but crappy
IS = works 100% like a dream

To prove it...I canceled my SAIX account more than 4 months back, and still am with IS based ISP, namely www.intdev.co.za, yes they havent announced any price reductions ect as of yet, but hey they have beeon with IS for some time now and I havent had any problems so far.

Clipse I dont think you give fair judgement, you are large supporter of IS due to all your business with them, They are a very good ISP if not one of the best, I am not saying any diffrent, I just belive for diffrent type of apps SAIX are better, notice I seel both, I have no reson to put on over the other !

actually saix is worse on voip because its packet-shaped. so it doesn't matter what the MTU is, it's still shaped based on the source/destination address in the packet header. and afaik IS doesn't shape on voip. the latency also doesn't have much to do with things unless you using your connection for online gaming, where you can't afford a delay of say half a second. at worst, the increased latency will result in a slight delay in receiving/transmitting packets, you would barely notice a delay of 0.5sec for example. the only time latency would become an issue is if it exceeds 1000ms-1500ms, which is rare anyway.

I have only used IS adsl accounts, and compare it directly with SAIX.. If anything, SAIX is only superior to IS when it comes to gaming to SGS SAIX servers, for a good reason.

Anything else, and I mean it.. Anything.. IS outperform SAIX shaped adsl accounts.
