I've been reading so many posts from people who want to move to IS so I had a look through their website. From what I've gathered so far I know they are a provider but that's about it.

1.) Do they work through your normal ADSL line?
2.) Which network are they using (not SAIX I think...) and is it satellite or what?
3.) What does it actually cost?
4.) Where do you get it as on the IS website you can't order it?

done...

So from what I've understood is that their company is mainly for companies and not for home users.

uncapped 512 is 2700R... trying to get more information

Uncapped 512k from us for R1250 inc. vat, this is a business no-p2p IS uncapped solution.

www.is.co.za - do not sell to the public, they offer 99.9% of their products via resellers, thats why you wont see pricelists etc. on their website.

The IS business uncapped 1024K goes for R2700 per month (excluding Telkom costs). The business uncapped 512K goes for R1350 per month (excluding Telkom costs).

From their FAQ's:

What kind of latency are users going to experience?
Clients can experience anything from about 500 - mille seconds latency depending on the time of day, as Business ADSL makes use of satellite bandwidth for international browsing and we do not have control of Telkom’s infrastructure

SMTP Relay – do we allow this?
No! The idea of supplying the client with 4 useable IP address is to enable him to install his own e-mail server, web server etc

What is the contention ratio? And what is the realistic bandwidth I can expect?
We cannot guarantee any contention ratio because of the fact that there is Telkom involvement in the exchange as well as the ATM cloud. We would look at about a 30:1 contention on the internet breakout.

What service guarantees does IS Business ADSL give?
Telkom does not provide any guarantees or service levels for ADSL. This applies both to performance of the service, and support thereof. For instance, there is no guarantee regarding the amount of bandwidth which users will obtain, or of any service levels for users reporting faults to Telkom. ISPs providing ADSL Internet access services are reliant on Telkom's support of the ADSL infrastructure. ISDSL services are thus provided without any guarantees.

Will users be disconnected every 24 hours with IS Business ADSL?
Telkom disconnects all ADSL users after they have been connected to the service for 24 hours. In addition, any users who are idle (i.e. they do not generate any traffic) for an hour are also logged out automatically. Although with the IS Business ADSL service these disconnections still occur, the IS service includes mechanisms to provide as continuous service as possible and automatically reconnect when required.

All fees you mentioned franna is ex vat. The fee I mentioned in our offer, is including vat.

Points 3 and 4 where answered. though not these two I think:

1.) Do they work through your normal ADSL line?Yes, You connect exactly the same way as you normally would and would use telkoms network to connect to IS
2.) Which network are they using (not SAIX I think...) and is it satellite or what? After you are at IS through Telkoms network, you get routed via Satellite to international, which is the reason for the higher latency. Even though corrently its almost the same as SAIX accounts. However I have personally seen an "decrease"(edited sorry not thinking what I'm typing again) in Latency on my personall SAIX account over the last 2 weeks and my gaming ping is sitting at between 380 and 600 (Packet lose is still a bit bad though)

EDIT : and Franna anwsered it for me while I was typing.. LOL we seem to be doing that a lot lately! :)

Clipse: what do you mean by no P2P is it blocked ? or what do you mean when you say no p2p ? Will it limite P2P locally as well?

Secondly what are HTTP, FTP and SSL like?

Also the IS package is it a 1 year contract or will you do month by month other intervals?

Will the package come with at least 1 fixed ip?

IS uncapped ADSL sux for any type of VOIP etc as there is a massive latency, in addition I have not been getting true speeds out of it and they have always got an excuse, I am looking for an account with a large cap

Still finalising the contract issue, currently all we know about this particular package is that its month to month.

No-p2p on this, is exactly what it says, at the reduced cost this was removed by packet filter on the supplied cisco router. No p2p locally aswell as internationally, ill make 100% sure about the local part but Im pretty sure its local aswell.

Its Dynamic IP, part of the reduced cost aswell. This is ideal for small businesses looking for a suitable uncapped solution for high bandwidth usage a month, the cost is justified for anyone aiming to use 15+ GIG a month.

Sure its still alot for uncapped, but its not bad compared to the same IS uncapped solutions ranging from R500-R700 more.

Ok lets work with your point here, lets say you get 256k on average out of the package, work out your potential over a month.. For any business, this is still a much more economical offer than the alternative. Even so, speed issues is not a constant issue, most of the time Ive done test I get on 512k line between 400-450k on speedtests and 40-45k/s internationally.

Clipse another question, do the more expensive IS accounts allow P2P?

ganymede1 yes the full fledged uncap does support p2p, I cant comment on how practical the p2p speed is.

I don't think IS sell the "retail" ADSL packages directly, only via their resellers. Thus no info on their site or from their staff.

You can how get a 3gig international/30 gig local account for R199 per month on a month to month contract. There are other permutations ranging from 2 to 10 gig.
This service is not a SAIX resold solution, it works via the IS network.
