The speed test on my ISDN (not ADSL) is 9.9 kB/s. Staying in Jhb, with Telkom lines currently @ 64 kB/s I can only imagine that somewhere, somehow, I am paying for bandwith that I am not getting. But after waiting for nearly 2 months for the installation of the line, I am getting used to "slow" service.

That is how fast isdn is 10kbs.I think you confusing the "64k" with 64kb/s.Even on telkom adsl you dont get 64kb/s.

8 bits = 1 byte

Bandwith is typically indicated in bits per second. Download speed is typically indicated in bytes per second.

Divide by 8 to get bytes per second.

So a 64 kilobits line (your ISDN) has a top download speed of 8 kilobytes per second without compression.

Your DSL is 512 kilobits per second, or about 64 kilobytes per second.
