Islamic prayers to be held at the Vatican

Staff writer, Al Arabyia News
Friday, 6 June 2014

For the first time in history, Islamic prayers and readings from the Quran will be heard at the Vatican on Sunday, in a move by Pope Francis to usher in peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Francis issued the invitation to Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during his visit last week to Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority.

Abbas, Peres, and Francis will be joined by Jewish, Christian and Islamic religious leaders, a statement released by Peres’s spokesperson said, according to the Times of Israel.

Holy See officials on Friday said the evening prayers would be a “pause in politics” and had no political aim other than to rekindle the desire for Israeli-Palestinian peace at the political and popular level, according to the Associated Press.

Low expectations

The Vatican will broadcast a live feed of the event to viewers across the world.

However, expectations for the event should be kept low, according to Rev. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the custodian of Catholic Church property in the Holy Land.

[No-one should think] “peace will suddenly break out on Monday, or that peace is any closer,” AP reported him as saying.

On Friday, the Pope met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and discussed ways of promoting peace and stability in Asia the Vatican said in a statement.

Don't worry reverend, we don't think that, at all...

i wonder what the prospects are for the pope to hold prayers in mecca ?

My thoughts exactly...Like when there were talks about building a mosque at ground zero of the twin towers. Would they allow a church to built in Iraq.

So the pope reckons that their differences can be settled if you show more tolerance towards each other religions? That is like admitting that neither God nor Allah is in actual control of the situation but that only man can sort this mess out...enlightened but on a slippery slope...

Can't read, huh? They expressly said over and over that they don't expect this to suddenly cause a breakout of peace. Straw man.

Besides, all three religions hold that man has a free will and can defy God's will. We are not automatons. We have to change our hearts and minds freely. Not even God can change your mind or heart against your will - He loves you too much to force himself on you.

it cant be a bad thing if religious leaders visit & pray together in each other's "traditional" areas / regions.

Guess he didn't love Mary then.
Bad guess. He expressly asked her permission. That is why her fait ("Let it be done to me according to your will") is so celebrated. It was her free consent.

Why do you always seem to pull these threads into off-topic religious discussions?

Why do you always lie?

hmmm, Pope Francis must be the Anti-Christ then.....

I would agree with you because, despite favourable references to "People of the Book", Islam is violently anti anything non-Islam and a glance at the growth of the religion from the time Muhommed captured Mecca leaves no room for doubt. Islam is a far bigger danger to the western world than Hitler or Stalin ever were.

Of course you'll burn in hell if you make the wrong choice, but hey, that's not important huh?

I bet your God is up there laughing his socks off at the pathetic little humans.

As long as he doesn't have expectations of Catholic prayers in Mecca...
