Isohost virtual private server reviewed

Have you installed a DNS server? I normally manage my own.

No ... On Rackspace I just created a new DNS (from their main menu on the same menu level as the servers), copied the name servers to my domain registrar and added A records for the server IP to the DNS on Rackspace ... makes sense? How's it done with these guys?

I don't have much faith in a hosting company that uses Wordpress for their website!
Don't knock Wordpress, I'm sure you don't have a product that comes close. There's a reason it accounts for half the world's CMS and roughly 17% of all websites. Would you trust a tech company that uses vBulletin?

Ah well, I guess we can't please everybody. We've actually had quite a few compliments on the minimalist feel we were going for. :)

Well put. You can't please everybody. The site is neat IMO.

Use Cloudflare for DNS if you dont wanna create your own nameservers.

It's a pity Mweb's server offerings are still stuck in the fax-your-application-forms in era, they're easily the best offerings on the local market

Virtual: http://www.mweb.co.za/productspricing/2/Business/Hosting/Virtual_Hosting.aspx
Bare Metal: http://www.mweb.co.za/productspricing/2/Business/Hosting/Server_Hosting.aspx

Everything uncapped, and I know a number of people using them - once you get past the paperwork and are online, they provide great service/support. Until someone else offers cheap uncapped hosting (like Mweb), no apple carts are going to be upset. It's just disappointing they provide such a *** first impression with their sign-on procedures.

Wordpress is not a real CMS platform. It is a blogging platform retrofitted (quite badly) to be a CMS. Umbraco, Kentico, Drupal, Joomla, etc are real CMS platforms. When I see a company, especially a tech company, using Wordpress as their main sales website alarm bells start ringing. I have to wonder why they couldn't roll their own website, or why took such a bad decision to use Wordpress. Then I start wondering if I would trust my money with them.

Bottom line is that Wordpress is amateur hour and if you want to be taken seriously in the tech world Wordpress just isn't going to cut it, especially when you have a large "Proudly powered by WordPress" link at the bottom of your website.

- there is nothing "cloud computing" about these servers, what exactly do you define as "cloud computing" ?

Cloud computing is a loaded term, but yes you're right, we are not yet doing what most people would consider "cloud" at this stage. VPS is certainly part of the cloud picture though and is an important component to get right, which is why we're starting with a solid virtual iron offering. Right now we're just doing IaaS, but we'll get to PaaS and other interesting things in due course. We're working bottom up the stack.

- appears to just simply be Hetzner reseller?

We are hosting at Hetzner, but we are not a re-seller of theirs. We are currently in progress with an AFRINIC LIR registration and will be pursuing more than one upstream provider once we have our own AS number and IP space. As it stands though, Hetzner has been able to provide us with the best price on hosting bandwidth.

- brag about local yet "remote.isohost.st" traces internationally?

Probably because "remote.isohost.st" is not ours, but "remote.isoho.st" is. It's a subtle difference, but if the domain is not misspelled you'll see it does in fact trace locally. Apart from some secondary DNS that we host on Linode, every bit of our infrastructure is local.

I don't know Umbraco or Kentico and would be interested in investigating them at some stage, but I have used Joomla and Mambo before that extensively in the past and they are really terrible. Drupal is certainly more flexible, but also requires a lot more work to get something simple off the ground.

WordPress is just a tool. It was the most efficient and expedient way to accomplish our goal. Sure, WordPress has its limitations, but we haven't hit them yet for what we're trying to do. In fact, as a CMS it has performed remarkably well, in that we've had to do absolutely nothing else except write the content. Rest assured, if and when its limitations prevent us from achieving our goals, then we'll invest in something else.

If you doubt our technical abilities, perhaps you should take a look at the custom virtual machine management tools we've built. It seems you would rather spend your money with a company that wastes effort on things they don't need? Look at where we are investing our time, you'll see it's in the right places. These are the things that result in an efficient business that can save customers money.

Leaving the "Proudly powered by WordPress" link in was a conscious decision. If you investigate my background a bit, you'll understand why. I believe in open source and have no problem giving credit where it is due.

The only thing worse than opinionated nerds is opinionated nerds going on about inconsequential rubbish. This forum is the worst.

Good luck with your business, guy.

Yeah, don't waste your time on the site, concentrate on the services. Wordpress is fine. Just look at OVH - probably the biggest hosting company in the world, incredible offerings and services, and a totally poo website. Wordpress would be an upgrade for them :) Not that I care, I've been and will be a customer there for a long time because their hosting is amazing.

Wow that is cheap. Worth trying them just for that ...

Have you used them? Hidden costs?

Been using them for +-year

All my sites hosted with them. No hidden costs. Got the $4pm self managed(installed kloxo control panel).

Used 980GB one month with no issues.

I setup BIND DNS and manage it with Kloxo. Run my own nameservers and all.

With the $4 package you could essentially run re seller hosting and make a huge profit.

Help desk is also great.

They have had some downtime issues in past with power issues or moving servers.. but for $4pm I am extremely happy.

Servers get full 10mbps download speeds

Thanks. Going to try Cloudflare (it's free and has some neat features) and keep BIND as the alternative plan.

OpenVZ feels sluggish compared to Xen on Virpus. Its probably oversold.

Took your advice and signed up for Xen. Yip feels fast. I see they have a special on until the 31st if you pay annually: $30/year = $2.50/month incl 1.5 TB data transfer. That's amazing!

Only downside vs Rackspace is 99.9% uptime vs 100%.
