Hey guys not sure if I’m in the right forum but anyways I’d like to ask.

I would like to start an ISP business but I would maybe like someone to walk me through what I need like licensing etc and if it is possible to get licensing and whether or not it’s worth pursuing such a business?? Im looking at starting small
And hopefully expand.

Thanks

Since you're planning to start small it's important for you to decide which part of the value chain you want to get involved in.

Normally the best place to start with this is as a reseller with a focus on great customer service. There are a number of guys doing that very successfully - some even in this forum. This doesn't require any licensing and is easy to get your foot in the door.

If you want to start building infrastructure - be it buying your own servers, putting up your own wireless towers or laying your own fibre - then you'll need to have deep pockets. You can quickly spend millions of Rands going down this route.

What I’m actually looking at is installing antennas in house and supplying them with wireless internet. Is that going to cost me millions ?? Or is there a way to start small maybe around R500k budget and then end up growing ?? There’s a guy that supplies me with wireless internet and he literally has about 100 clients and it’s only him and a guy that does the installations for him. That’s what I’m looking at doing. Please let me know if I can start small and if I can who I can contact to get more information etc.

Reseller is a good option as then you don't require the capital outlay, with must companies if you are a reseller you do their training course and then install on your own.

Good place to start as you then have the technical expertise behind you if and when needed.

If you do want to start your own you will require an ECNS and IECNS license from ICASA, once you have those you can then look at wholesale data.
