ISP offering good prices and a fixed IP address

OK, im abt to try and use a KeepMyIp software... does anyone think it could work with telkom coz im willing to start my own server
 
Well, it probably woundn't. AFAIK, your username disconnets on their server. It's too fast to really notice, but quick enough to get a new IP assigned. Have a look @ dynadns though. And maybe at gettting a free backup DNS somewhere, as you'll probably need it.

Tip: If you want to setup a server to make money off it (hosting, email hosting, game server, etc etc), rather spend the extra bucks and have it placed on IS / SAIX / MWEB / [name your fav ISP]'s backbone. They have the necessary UPS, lightning protection, standby techies, dedicated lines + IP addresses to make sure your server is online more than 95%
 
I know that Sentech has a wireless product called BizNet Express that is meant to be equivilent to Diginet.
Had a look at it a few months back and the price is quite competitive. Has anyone used it - what have been the experiences?
 
If you make use of a Netgear ADSL Router it has Dynamic DNS built into it, have a few clients running SBS2003 like that. You will need an ISP to create a DNS record pointing to the Dynamic name, I can FWD you a name of one that does that sort of thing. Have been doing this for about 2 years now, only hiccups are when the ADSL goes down...

Apparently the whole "cant use ADSL" is a ICASA ruling, I ran into some small problems in this regard this week too.
I really must find ICASA's rulings somewhere..
 
99% of the time it's better to just co-locate your server in a datacentre... It's MUCH more reliable and as mentioned has UPS's and decent amounts of bandiwidth.

It needn't be expensive, costs start at around 500 bucks which include a GB of bandwidth.

Instead of 512k or 1MB any decent DC will have far more, I think we're running via a redundant 100MBit connection.

dynDNS is a good option if you want to beable to remotely administer a file server or something; but's more trouble than it's worth when it comes to hosting web / emial... Uncapped ISADSL with dedicated IP's will do the trick but again it works out cheaper to have ADSL & Co-location or even shared hosting.
