lewstherin is 100% correct - most people just are not interested or care, so long as their email works and they can view websites.
Heck, a business buddy of mine STILL doesn't understand the concept of a network cable and ADSL - like lewstherin says, he still thinks about dialing and modems.
I say to him, "here's your network cable, plug it into your laptop here"
Him: "here ?"
Me: "No, that's your modem plug, if you look real carefully, you'll see that the network plug you have will not fit into that socket" (at this point I have visions of him as a toddler hammering the square peg into the round hole)
Him: "Aaah - ok, then I just dial out ?"
Me: "No, you plug the cable into your network point in the wall over here, the one that is labelled 3 - Dave"
Him: "Here ?" (tries to plug it into telephone socket)
Me: "No, that's for your telephone, you can see that the network cable won't fit" (at this point I have visions of me as a toddler hitting him over the head with the square peg)
Him: "Oh, ok, then I just dial out ?"
Me: "No, you don't dial out, remember I told you about that little room under the stairs where Telkom were the other day, hmmm ?"
Him: (looking confused): "Er, yeah, yeah sure"
Me: (baby talk) "Well, the nice man from Telkom installed ADSL for us and that's where your network cable goes to"
Him: "so, I don't dial out at all ?"
Me: (I'm almost there !) "no, your online 24/7"
Him: "Wow, that's amazing ! - these machines are incredible !"
Me: "Yes, they are, ok Dave, I'll be going now !" (make a desperate run for the door)
... As I'm walking out the door
Him: "What's my password for dialup ?"
