I have been with Telkom now since the beginning of Dec '03. For the last three days I've had access of 4-6k during the day. 4 hours (0860 - charged) on the phone and no-one can help me. I've been passed on to so many that I'm now dizzy. My line is 'fine' but the international bandwidth and slooow loading cannot fool me.

I know M-Web purchase and manage their bandwidth seperately to all of the others (whom all purchase from SAIX, Telkom included).

Has anyone anything good to say for Mweb? I have their application in my hand.

After such a dissapointing foray into broadband - consistency and support - I'm left with either (1) switching ISP & hope 4 something better or (2) regress to ISDN (which will be more expensive due to my work habits).

It really is a shame, I work from home doing internet production and just wish this could've worked. I've come to earth with one hell of a bump.

Anyone testify for something better than Telkom? And no, MyWireless - Sentech is too expensive and no-one that I know has ACTUALLY USED it yet, so I don't think a recommendation 4 that is what I need.

Thx.

How is R850 pm (for the 256k MyWireless package) too expensive? It's the same price as ADSL. Do you really use 512k all day every day?

I'm not in a position to recommend it yet as I haven't tried it either but at least wait a few months to hear what others have to say before passing judgement [;)]

I posted somewhere here the pricing directly off of their site and it weighed in (512k) line at over R 1,000.00 per month, here you go, and yes, I do want 512k p/s, 'standard' broadband (in my opinion):

quote:
MyWireless 512
512Kbps shared
R 1449,00/month*
24 Month contract
Including Internet access and the wireless modem (USB or PCMCIA)

Say the modem is R2,000.00. Over 24 months of the contract, that means you save R83.00 off the package's price. Woo hoo. Plus I'll willingly slate the contract's length. You want to get involved in that? Not happy and you're stuck for two years. I don't know of another company in my experience (UK incl.) whom stipulate such a long period. 12 months is reasonable, 24 in my opinion, is not.

Pricing here:

... remove the line break.

Actually Fusion01 the pricing for the modem from what I hear and read on other sites is around R3500-R4000 :) and yes it is more expensive BUT you don't have a cap but if you want another alternative for ISP, I don't know if you can get one since ISP's just buy from Telkom but hey I could be wrong:)

Yep the modem is in the region of R4000 so you're paying off around R166 per month.

On the ISP issue, the only difference with M-Web is that they have their own BRAS (authentication) servers so they can change your password themselves without having to go through Telkom. Other than that it's the same vanilla ADSL.

Well I've damn well cancelled my ADSL and am getting a full refund. Now I'm going to try MWeb, but Perdition thanks for the advice - it doesn't look like I'm in to keep my sanity for long here.

Do you personally use ADSL? Am I the only one here doing my nut????? :)

I mean, often a dial-up just seems better. More reliable. 4k ps instead of my often 2-4k ps on ADSL internationally thru' HTTP and FTP.

Netgear 834 router and all other bits are of high quality, 2km from the xchange - what could be wrong? Is it this bad for everyone???!!! Should I just grab a beer / watch tv and forget about this?

No I'm not using ADSL, though much like yourself my work requires connection during the day, thus a proper 24/7 solution would be fantastic. Unfortunately until one is available I'd rather just stick with ISDN and avoid the frustration. This is why I'm hoping Sentech's solution is solid (though I expect they will have a few initial problems).

I doubt your problems are related to your line and hardware but more a result of the ineptitude of the Telkom ADSL network engineers. Either that or they boosted priority on leased line traffic as a result of customers complaining, hence ADSL users getting shafted.

And how exactly do they manage that? Also, SAIX == Telkom essentially.
