Hi

Does anyone know of ISP specific IP - meaning a IP that I can ping, but it will only work from a specific ISP.

Something like worksonly.from.Vodacom.co.za. which will only be pingable when using a vodocom connection.

It would be nice to have for checking if your ISP link is up.

Maybe you should rather tell us why you would like to know if your 'vodacom' isp link is connected to the interwebs?

Generally, your ifconfig (or ipconfig equivalent) will tell you what address the other end of your PPP connection is using. You can then use ping with a TTL of 1 to make sure that you can connect directly to that address (as opposed to routing via a different ISP).

A bit of scripting can then adjust routing tables accordingly.

Maybe I'm confused. But surely if u can ping or connect to something on the internet..ur ISP link is up?

I assumed he had multiple links/routes. i.e. Can I reach TelkomADSL directly? OK, turn off the 3G connection. etc

Yes, multiple links, firstly to determine which link is up ADSL or Voda3G or 8ta 3G

Having a link up doesn't mean it can transport either.

I think the TTL may do the trick for me - will read up on it.
