Now that i think about it actually a simple matter of routing ips and a dual database to record whats what.

if the isp's put in a little more effort they could actually do the splitting on their side instead of us going to great lengths to achieve this

to my knowledge (i stand to be corrected) that any account that has international and local cap combined has a method of limiting which traffic goes where so when u reach your int cap it moves over to local but on the local side they dont do anything but if they used a similar method of tracking like with the int, then local could also be deducted form your local cap and will leaving your int cap for international traffic. its just a second record to track the local traffic.

just a theory i have

Somewhere there is a thread where it is explained why it is not that simple. It is possible, but it will cost Telkom too much to upgrade their systems to make it possible.

It comes down to this.

1. It has never been done anywhere else in the world, thus development for one on a huge scale

2. The real problem is not splitting the bw, but doing the calculations separately. Now it is possible, but to go and record it for all adsl subscribers? Well madness if you think about the amount of calculation power you need in "real time". It just won't happen, and therefore also cost even more than what it is worth.

Thus for what they get out and what they put in...its a bad business decision theoretically and technically as well.

They should just pop 1x WRT54GL router with GateCrashers script on it. Problem sorted ;)

The rest of the world doesn't need to do this because they have decent packages ;)
