ISP's offering more than 384 up

Hello everyone,

we are a small business of about 40 clients that need to upload (ftp and http) large amounts (a gig or so) of data to the US on a daily basis. At present we have a 4mb saix line and get our gb's from axxess. Our upload speeds are very slow so i'm looking for a way to increase them. After doing a couple of simple tests i'm pretty sure that our problem is not outgoing congestion, due to the number of users on the lan, but rather that our line simply isn't quick enough. Telkom don't offer upload speeds of more than 384 so i was wondering if anyone out there knows of an isp or tier 1 provider that does.

As i see it there are two options that i should consider.

1 - find an isp that offers higher upload speeds

2 - get another adsl account and use that gateway just for the ftp uploaders, though i don't think this will increase speeds much

If anybody can help or if there are any other suggestions out there i'm all ears!

ADSL is not for you. You're going to have to look at another connection method such is diginet.

yeah diginet is not exactly cheap, and a gig up a day really shouldn't be asking too much of an adsl connection so I'd prefer a more affordable way to up our throughput.

Moklet, do you mean bonded dsl? I don't know much about it but i'll have a look. Is there a way to effectively loadshare over multiple pppoe's? I thought that using 2 wouldn't double the speed of our connection but rather allow splitting of traffic by pppoe. which i guess would increase general internet speed, but i don't know by how much.
 
Well i don't think you are going to find another solution.. 384k is slow upload speed but ye the only fast alternative is diginet as far as i know.

I thought that on a line with 4 mbps downstream your upstream should be 640 kbps regardless of the ISP.
I currently get 640 kbps upstream on my line which means I can upload 1 GiB in about 4.5 hours.

From my understanding, the upload speed for 4mb is 384kbps?

As discussed, Diginet is probably your best bet. I've dealt with ADSL bonding in the UK and it can be a tricky business. I've only seen it work well with high-end (expensive) routing equipment, but there have been some good homebrew methods that have accomplished similair.
 
We looked at 1024/4096 lines (384k upload) for interconnecting our offices via OpenVPN. However, we took 512k ADSL lines (256k upload) as it was difficult to justify the additional monthly line rental costs for additional 128k upload speed.

One option we are considering now is to install additional ADSL lines at each site and use a multi-homing load balancing broadband router. Miro Distribution (www.miro.co.za) sell them. Costs are between R900 and R1100 (Edimax). They have models with up to 4 WAN ports. We would then connect 2 ADSL lines to the router. This could be an option for you as different users could be dynamically directed to a a different WAN line.
