If I posted this in the wrong category then kindly accept my apologies. I could not find a more suitable category. I believe this might have bearing on the majority? of Internet connections in SA.

I own a relatively busy web site where a large part of the traffic is from South Africa.

I would like to implement SSL (https) for some sections of the web site that requires a login for an extra layer of security which i think is probably much needed.

The thing that is holding me back is that ISP's in South Africa is shaping ports (other than port 80) which will make the https:// pages load slowly on my web site ?

Would this be an issue here in South Africa? If it is really slow I would rather just stick to http:// and take my chances regarding the extra layer of security.

No, it will not be noticeably slower. And yes you should use SSL on any pages that require any sensitive info to be sent over the internet.

Not only should you use SSL for your login page, but you should implement it across your whole site. Remember SSL not only protects the data your user submits to your site, but also assures your users that the content they view from your site is secure and authentic too. Plus it's well known now that Google uses SSL as one of the metrics when ranking your site in their organic search results.
