'Insult'

On Sunday a top aide to US President Barack Obama said Israel's announcement of plans to build 1,600 homes for Jews in East Jerusalem was "destructive" to peace efforts.

David Axelrod said the move, which overshadowed Mr Biden's visit to Israel, was also an "insult" to the United States.

Just hours before the announcement Mr Biden had emphasised how close relations were, saying there was "no space" between Israel and the US.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has tried to play down the unusually bitter diplomatic row between the two allies.

He said the announcement was a "bureaucratic mix-up" and that he "deeply regretted" the timing of the announcement.

Under the Israeli plans, the new homes will be built in Ramat Shlomo in East Jerusalem.

The Palestinians are threatening to boycott newly agreed, indirect talks unless the Ramat Shlomo project is cancelled.

Close to 500,000 Jews live in more than 100 settlements built since Israel's 1967 occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this.

Even the US are getting pissed. Should get interesting :D.

There is another possibility.

It could be a carefully choreographed drama between Israel and the US for Arab consumption to enhance the US’s acceptability to mediate peace negotiations. I cannot see Israel and the US getting on the outs with one another. For their separate reasons they both want to foreground themselves and Israel will serve as an admirable ‘blunt instrument’ for American ambitions in the ME. Israel will willingly serve as an American proxy because it suits their (different) reasons and they can expect US support. Besides, an American “Oops! We miscalculated” is not good enough for Israel when their national survival is at stake. They will always be the final arbiter of their destiny (whatever the American druthers).

Does anyone have numbers for the current Jewish population of East Jerusalem? And any idea of how the current figures compare to the population there before the ethnic cleansing by the Jordanians in 1948? I imagine absolute numbers have gone up, but how about proportionally?

the us will never turn against Israel- that would be a "noose" for any president- there are too many influential Jews in the states

More likely because there is no alternative. Israel is the only reasonable( in comparison to other major M.E states) modern democracy in the M.E. The Palestinians desperately need a reasonable democratic leadership the west feels they can trust and deal with.

Geez, now that middle east situation is complex. These guys have talks to have talks about talks!

Both sides have substantial factions that don't want a peaceful solution. I suppose one must keep trying, but it looks 100% hopeless to me.

Neither the Israeli’s nor the Arab’s expect peace. There **will** be a reckoning. It’s not an IF it’s a WHEN. The best that can be hoped for – and what the objective is – is an indefinite postponement of open hostility (kick the WHEN down the road). It can only be called ‘peace’ loosely speaking.

That BBC report does not tell the whole story; the settlement announcement was made by Netanyahu's political opponents. It's political points-scoring at its lowest, and inflammatory threads like this are equally low.

Killa, I like you but I would really love it if you came with me for a week or 2 to Israel and saw whats really going on there, on the ground
I was there, place is Jewish redneck ville, no thanks. not again. The tourists I met on the kibbutz were not even religious just looking for a cheap getaway and a bang.

Being a redneck yourself you'd obviously love it :/
