Hi all

I renewed my driver's licence in June before it was to expire. It is now 12 weeks and still no new licence card. Apparently there are problems with the company Prodiba who issue the cards. My receipt to show that I have renewed has now expired (after 3 months) which means if I get pulled over I will be fined.

The local municipality where I did the renewal now tell me I have to apply for a temporary driver's licence as they have no idea how long it will take before I will eventually get my card.

Is this correct? Must I apply for a temp licence? I can't find anything related to this issue on either the gov. website or that of the RTI.

My understanding is that I did everything by the book and the delay is not my problem. Why should I have to pay again.

If someone could provide me with more info and pointers I would appreciate it.

Many thanks

It's pretty simple. Just go to your nearest drivers licence department and apply for a temporary drivers licence. You pay a bit of money and they issue it on the spot. I think it's valid for 6 months. That's all you'll need.

Seems like I have no choice but to do the temp licence. I have also spoken to one of the town's senior traffic officials who told me the same thing. To me it is the principle of having to pay twice for the same thing when someone else has made a bugger up.

Completely agree, it sucks. What they should actually do as a matter of course is to issue everyone who renews their licence a free temp licence while they wait for their card to arrive.

I asked about an extension or free temp licence but they said no, I have to pay, something like R90 plus 2 photos. Will go there in the morning and apply. With my luck I will do the temp licence and 2 days later my card will arrive.

Happened to me as well, they told me just to keep the receipt of payment in the car with my old license and the police will accept that.

You should be so lucky.

I just realised the double meaning of my post, had a good laugh.

I did ask if the traffic cops will accept my receipt with old licence and explanation (the answer was no), and even asked for a letter from the local RTI to say I am waiting for my card but to no avail.

Hopefully some miracle might have taken place between last week and this week and my card is ready. Otherwise, I will APPLY for a temp licence :) and then start the waiting game all over again.

I was actually stopped by cops during the waiting period at the airport.
I only had my old license with me.
The cop actually asked me where my receipt was.
I told him I had left it in my other car.
So I got a R500 fine.

The purpose of a temp licence are for those cases where you lost you drivers licence or renew an already expired licence - You fall into neither category. The norm is 4 weeks prior to expiry you need to renew - you are way within this threshold. If you drive with the expired card and proof of renewal, I don't believe a court will consider it fair to sanction a fine in these circumstances that are way beyond your control.

The problem being that you would need to go to court...

Just pay the money for a temporary license and be done with it - it's going to be less money and less hassle than contesting fines in court.

I understand that implication, but It's all about the principle at the end of the day, and if you willing to stand up against what you believe to be wrong.
