Hi guys, need some advice/help.

Am completely useless with BB technology but my girlfriend has a torch 9800 that has started to give her issues

It randomly switches off regardless of the battery level and only comes on if the battery is pulled or it is plugged in to a charger.does anyone know what the issues could be?hardware or firmware?

Hardware issue. Probably fluid damage. Does she use the phone only as intended?

As far as I am aware yes..but I will check for the water damage issue.

So there is nothing firmware related that I could do to fix it without taking it in?

Have the phone inspected for water, pyridine, squalene, urea, acetic acid, lactic acid, complex alcohols and glycols, ketones, and aldehydes

It could also be a faulty battery. Try testing the phone with another battery to check if the battery, or the hardware, is faulty.

Lol @ urea

Thanks man..will take it in and have it checked out. Phone is just a year old :-/ wish it was as easy as flashing custom rooms on android (am I allowed to say that here)

Sounds like a faulty battery. Get it checked. It might take up to 8 weeks to get the phone back if you give it to MTN. Good thing with BB is that if they can't fix the fault, they give you a new one. Good luck

not battery?

Hi I have the same phone same was happening then after a few weeks screen graphic started
going weird after opening slide and opening an app. This made use of the phone awkward
a day or so laster screen went blank regardless if in close or open mode. Faulty ribbon was the cause
had same replaced phone is 100% now and no switching off.

Could be leading to the same fault I had !!

its easier flashing a BB than a droid.

It might not be a bad idea upgrading to the latest 9800 OS.

when she did a firmware check it was reported that she was on the latest OS, am not too clued up with the firmware landscape but when i checked the VC website it seemed to be the latest as reported. Would you have other sources for these?

There are a couple of options at this link. You can choose an "official" release from any vendor (just remove the vendor.xml files before installation, you will find all the instructions on the forum) or a "leaked" os. I don't understand why the South African couriers do not offer these upgrades to us more frequently, because I have found that they improve things.

Even so, the issues sounds like a bad battery to me.

Hau?
Root device (Unlock Root)
Install ROM Manager
Download ROM of your choice
Backup Current
Flash..voila
No like? Recover back to previous ROM..voila.

Yep.

BB:
Download latest OS from and carrier and install on PC.
Delete vendor.xml file.
Open BB Desktop Manager, and click Yes when prompted to upgrade.

No rooting needed, backup done automatically.

Interesting - does seem easy

what are the chances of bricking?

It is easy! I have never bricked a Blackberry, even my husband's 9900, and I have done several upgrades for most of the other models: the old 9000, 9700, 9780, 9790, 8520, 9300, 9360, 9800 and 9810 (yes, I am the family's personal geek :p ).

I was amazed to see what Vodacom charges if they do an update/backup for you.

I've never bricked one before, but I have fixed a couple that had a white screen of death; you can actually reload the OS on them.
