Has anyone else been experiencing problems with Crown Technologies of late?

Based on a number of positive feedback from fellow forumites, I decided to go ahead with the order of a copy of Adobe Master Suite CS4 Student edition for my brother from them.

I had originally asked them to check for stock for a cheaper option (the design one, I think). They got back to me and said, yes, they have stock but when I gave it some thought, I decided on getting the Master collection instead.

On 24 March 2010, I placed the order, received an e-mail stating the generic order process with instructions at the bottom to deposit money into their account and to e-mail confirmation of payment to them. Since I had an upcoming conference, I made the transfer and sent proof of payment to them at once.

I then received an e-mail shortly afterwards with the following message:

We found stock of this product but the price has changed with the new stock that came but we only have one left instock. New price is R3433.45 inc vat!

The cost was about R200 but still cheaper than elsewhere but I was a bit annoyed that at no point in time was I informed that I would have to first check with them that the price was right before I should pay (after all, the instructions on their e-mail told me to make the payment!). I told them to cancel my order and refund me my money.

The next day, Ruaan e-mails me to tell me:

We do apologize for the inconvenience but you didn’t have to pay the order until we got back to you regarding the availability. I’m sending your Acc details to our accounts department for a refund!

So clearly it was my fault for wanting to be a good customer and pay quickly.

I hear no news what so ever from them. I return from conference and on 19 April 2010, fire off another e-mail to them.

On 20 April, I am sent an e-mail informing me that my order's status has changed to Refund Pending.

On 13 May, I get another e-mail:

Your order has been updated to the following status.

New status: Refund Pending

Please reply to this email if you have any questions.

The comments for your order are

Good Day

We apologize for the delay in the refunds we had a few technical problems that was sorted out. We will be refunding the orders this week.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused but this won’t happen ever again since we have made secondary plans if this should happen again in the future.

Kind Regards
CrownTech Team

I then sent another message (three, actually - two via e-mail, one to the webmaster, one to Ruaan and one via their website's Contact Us page) but have so far been ignored.

I'm hoping I'm wrong but these guys have been holding onto my money for well over a month (almost two months, as a matter of fact) - I fail to see how difficult it is to give me my money back, seeing that they didn't place any order in the first place!

I too, have placed an order with the value of R3800. they told me three weeks - i said fine, i'll wait.

yesterday, as it's 1 day away from 3 weeks, i mailed them using their website "contact form", and asked what the status was - still no reply.

This is pathetic, my co-worker ordered a BUNCH of stuff from canada - took him 2 days for delivery.
Crowntech needs 3 flippen weeks for 1 single item, and can't even reply to my e-mails? WTF?

Anyone else having problems with them? please also post if you are indeed receiving your items though, as well.

Always pay with a credit card. That way if the store does not honour its obligations you can get a refund via your credit card company.

EFT is protected in the same way. You would need to open a case with SAPS first in both cases...

Thanks P924. I will e-mail Crown Technologies one last time before I go open a case with the police.

Just phoned them. The guy promises to do the refund NOW and mail me proof of payment.

Let's see what happens

It is? Not as far as I know. To process a credit card online you have to apply for the service. In applying for the service you accept and comply to certain terms and conditions, such as the requirement of an invoice, a website hosted in South Africa, a business check account, ect. The recourse for undelivered goods is stipulated in the T/C of the credit card service.

Anyone with a bank account can receive an eft.

I realise its still a crime, but its your problem, the bank is not going to get your money back for you.
Whereas if you pay by credit card, it takes a few months, but the bank can go and take the money out of their account and give it back to you because of the credit agreement.

To get your money back with EFT you have to follow the whole legal route...

Well, I have received a proof of payment from them so thankfully, I do not have to pursue any legal routes.

It was very frustrating that I didn't get my money for almost two months but at least my problem is resolved now.

No. Credit card transactions - especially CARD NOT PRESENT transactions have additional protections. If you do not receive your goods you can make a complaint to your card issuer, who will investigate and pending no proof of delivery from the merchant, issue a charge back on the amount.
Here are some reasons why a cardholder may initiate a charge back: http://www.nedbank.co.za/website/content/nedlink/chargeback.asp

Who initiates a chargeback?
Chargebacks occur for a variety of reasons and originate from either the issuer or the cardholder.

Some examples of each are listed below:

Issuer initiated chargebacks include:
transaction charged to an expired or invalid card;
the manual transaction was incorrectly entered;
the manual transaction did not have an imprint of the card; and
multiple charges made for the same transaction.

Cardholder initiated chargebacks include:
mail/telephone order merchandise was not received or is defective;
transaction amount is incorrect;
multiple charges made for the same transaction; and
purchase was not made by the cardholder (suspected fraud).

Only the last item (suspected fraud) should attract a South African police case number. The other cases are not necessarily criminal fraud. They may be honest mistakes on the part of the merchant or failure to use a reliable way of sending your goods to you.

Note that using Verified By Visa and MC 3D Secure makes the buyer less likely to win a charge back - depending on reason.

EFT is different. EFT is the same as physically giving someone money, eg writing a cheque or sending cash. EFT, cheque and cash transactions do not have such stipulations (as bolded above). Basically if you as a shop have a merchant account you have to be prepared and ready for charge backs. EFT, cash and cheque transactions do not have such stipulations.
