I just got am SMS from a funny number "895" that has a message that reads, "Yello, you can now Get up to 95% Off All your calls on MTN Zone. To accept this offer, reply "YES" for FREE."

I think this is a scam and MTN must warn it's subscribers.

It's not a scam but a a product which MTN offer to their pre-paid users. It works by giving one a discount depending on one's location, time and the network load AFAIK. If you search for MTN Zone in the news section, you'll find an article or 2 on it.

I know that but is the 895 an MTN number coz I think if it was really MTN they would use +555? And to set up MTN Zone there are set USSD's for that you don't have to reply "yes" to have that activated unless they have another way of activating MTN Zone.

ah i c, best is to phone in or ask the rep about this as don't see why it would be neccessary to reply via SMS to activate MTN Zone instead of using the USSD menu. I also wouldn't risk it in-case it suddenly deducts a good amount off your airtime.

Hi
The sms is valid. It is being sent from MTN. If you need further information feel free to visit the site www.mtn.co.za and read up on MTN Zone. Alternatively you can call 173.
Regards
DD

Just to add, its aimed at people not using it at the moment. Its the same as using the USSD menu to activate.
