It makes me sad every time...

A teacher here just asked me to print out a poster on Evolution for her and then proceeded to tell me that "It's OK if it's got something funny in it, it's junk anyway. It's just a theory."

I don't know if I have the strength to explain the difference between "theory" in English and "Theory" in Science again. :erm:

Just print out the poster. Not sure why you want to debate her on her beliefs.

@Picard: Nope :) Literal Creationist
@Hamster: Oh no, the opinion doesn't upset me. Puzzles me sure - it's more the "It's just a theory" bit. So more a problem of syntax.
We have these kind of debates all the time - it's fun :)

I think I'll print out the C&H evolution comic for her :D

Well, what don't you like about "It's just a theory"?

Watched an interesting documentary last night, it really illustrates perfectly how closed off literal creationists become to protect their beliefs. Worth the watch.

I'd have replied with "So is religion" and see her try to "prove" it's real

Well fortunately she's actually cool to talk to so we do have these kind of debates :D It just always grinds me a bit when the "It's just a theory" thing comes out. You don't see people leaping off buildings because "Gravity is just a theory".

I really don't mind the creationist bit, especially since she's the first to admit that at some point (as I've said before), it comes down to "Because that's how I believe it is."

Thanks for the video, looks pretty cool.

If this person is meant to be teaching evolution then that is really sad.

Just tell the the old bird that evolution and the theory of evolution pose absolutely no problem for creation (including the view that humans are special creations), the soul, original sin etc. Maybe then she will relax.

Last I looked, Evolution was just a theory. Highly regarded and widely adopted, but still just a theory
Look up what it means when something is a scientific theory.

It doesn't mean the same thing as when used in everyday conversation.

A scientific theory or law represents an hypothesis, or a group of related hypotheses, which has been confirmed through repeated experimental tests. Theories in physics are often formulated in terms of a few concepts and equations, which are identified with "laws of nature," suggesting their universal applicability. Accepted scientific theories and laws become part of our understanding of the universe and the basis for exploring less well-understood areas of knowledge. Theories are not easily discarded; new discoveries are first assumed to fit into the existing theoretical framework. It is only when, after repeated experimental tests, the new phenomenon cannot be accommodated that scientists seriously question the theory and attempt to modify it. The validity that we attach to scientific theories as representing realities of the physical world is to be contrasted with the facile invalidation implied by the expression, "It's only a theory." For example, it is unlikely that a person will step off a tall building on the assumption that they will not fall, because "Gravity is only a theory."

Think you need to become more acquainted with the scientific method. While evolution "is just a theory", creation is just a hypothesis with nothing to back it up.
