Hi guys. I'm currently doing a 3 year IT diploma (second year now). Plan on getting my BTech part time after I'm already in the industry. I'm currently doing some front end web development on the side (signature) because it's easy to get into. I don't plan on doing it forever though.
I'm an 85% average at college (not saying much since things are kind of easy where I am) so I'm "good" (by their metrics) at pretty much everything. Systems Analysis, Information Systems, Programming (currently Java, next year C#) and Web Development (more like JavaScript basics).
I've been thinking about which area to specialize in and that's what I'm here to ask your opinions on. I don't truly dislike anything, except maybe my frustrations in Web with PHP and JavaScript. Information Systems seems alright, but the idea of doing UML and ERM diagrams for the next few decades sounds the same as becoming the most boring person in existence to me. Systems Analysis/Design on the face of it seems to be a bit more corporate-facing with more room for "climbing the ladder" than programming/back end development, but I also don't want to be sucked into thinking it will be nice now and then regretting the decision a few years later. Programming/back end seems like the area one would experience more variety in.
As for stress, I like to think I can perform well in a high stress environment, as long as I don't have to depend on others to get things done. I don't want this kind of thing to be happening all the time though. The ladies might like the grey haired salt and pepper look, but I don't want to be that guy at 30 with grey hairs.
What do you think? It's not about the paycheck in the end otherwise I'd just listen to all the articles MBB posts about IT salaries and such things and go with that. Ultimately, it's all about enjoying life.
