Which network you with in SA? Vodacom has a nice roaming product at present:
1GB roaming data for R99 valid for 7 days...
5GB roaming data for R349 valid for 7 days...

They both auto-renew, and auto activate on landing :)

Alternatively if you have an eSim phone, download the Airalo app, and chose a bundle for Italy. Have used them in Germany and Belgium...

With Afrihost not sure they have one of those options, also have a small router i might take if I can get a cheap data sim there
 
Airalo works perfectly.

If you don't have an esim buy a cheap Vodafone sim there and use that 3G router you have.

Glad you finally made it! Enjoy!

One of my biggest regrets for my France trip in particular was not doing some of the experiences etc I wanted to, Spend a bit now if you have to your future self will thank you and you will forever have the memory!
