Actually its a very well thought out opinion piece... its a pity that the right minded people who understand it are not the ones in power.
 
i find the issue of poverty and minimum wage a diversion in this article and the subject of another separate conversation.
if it was worth pursuing in the article, the author should be asking why minimum wage isn't adhered to and why people are still willing to work for R300 per month?
it all sounds very noble until you put the prices up by 50% in your supermarket (we all know how well the eskom price hikes went down).
farmers then automate and mechanise because labour becomes too expensive and consumers are moaning about prices.
the whole issue is part of a separate debate.

sorry, if you're going to use an argument to back up your point, follow it, don't use it as a garnish of pseudo-philanthropic reasoning.
the real issue was and always is what malema is capable of and whether the anc as a whole share his viewpoint.
if this had been another farmer and malema had not been shooting his mouth off, this would have been a non-issue.
much as the last 1000 farmer killings have been.

It's better than nothing. Unemployment is very high and not everyone has a COSATU willing to go on strike for them.

I think we had racial inequalities before Malema came along. He isn't a cause - he's a symptom.
 
Farm workers used to have free housing, basic foodstuffs, water, electricity and other benefits. The couple of hundred Rands they got was disposable income which was probably more than most got. Then these workers got the idea put into their heads that they should have a right to ownership of the farm and then the trouble started....

Nevermind the AWB and the radical blacks like Malema, its the prospect of starving to death that should be higher on our list of worries.
 
No, inequality is definitely at the center of this debate. The author just didn't take it far enough. He should be asking why is equality not being achieved faster. And the answer is, at least in part, our retarded gov.

By DA's count (To be taken with a pinch of salt) wasteful ANC spending is now at 1 billion since july (i.e. 8 months). 1 Billion could have gone a long fixing things. But no...the armed forces need more Mercs to defend out country against uhh something.
