OK I need help!
iTunes does not detect my iPhone when I plug it in, running stock 4.2.1, with iTunes 10.1.0.56

When I connect my phone it starts charging, and I can access my photos etc, but iTunes does not pick it up at all. Tried repairing iTunes installation, reboot phone and pc, to no avail

Any ideas on what else could be causing problems?

Hi, had a similar issue the other day,

have you got the Apple Mobile Device app installed, listed seperately under programs (win 7) and there is also a service that needs to be started.
use winRAR to unzip the itunes.exe into msi components, and manually install the Appme Mobile Device msi. I struggled for some time (tried to hack my phone and pc rebooted and since then couldn't sync again) but eventually got it working by installing the 10.0 itunes Apple mobile device msi, as the 10.1 version kept rolling back. Durning Itunes install this obviously happens but you get no notification of this.

Hope that helps

I have the Apple Mobile Device Support installed (v 3.3.0.69) and the service is started. I did a repair on the installation as well, no luck.

I had a similar experience a while ago...

It was the cable :) For some or other reason my old 3GS cable did not work with the iPhone 4...

PS saw a post a few months ago from someone else, turned out to be the USB port he was using...

Seems it is not the cable. I have used it for quite some time. Tried with a colleague's cable now, same problem.

USB, apple provided new bootcamp drivers which I installed recently. Not sure if that could be the problem.

But I can still access my photo's on the device, the computer recognises the phone..

check your event logs for USB warnings/erros at the same time you plug in your iPhone.

If you get these you Apple mobile device is not working properly, my service was started and all looked normal but something was still missing.

If this is the case for you,

1. uninstall the Apple Mobile Device (leaving everything else intanct)
2. restart computer and install Apple Mobile Device again
3. if that doesn't work follow http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925 to completely uninstall Itunes.
4. I uninstalled everything several times and dit not lose any iTunes data (podcast/ music etc) all was fine.
5. reinstall iTunes and see specifically check in programs that all individual components has been installed.
6. if Apple Mobile Device doesn't install try 10.0 version as mentioned before.

Event logs are all clean. I completely uninstalled itunes, but faling to download the latest (i updated through apple software update, cant find the damn msi package)
Will download from work in the morning and give feedback!

Thanks for the help so far!

OK it finally works! Completely uninstalled everything, downloaded iTunes again this morning and reinstalled. I can finally sync again!

Thanks a lot!
