Itunes requires quicktime.is that a separate download? Where on the macbook does one verify the os?

OS X Comes with both. Even the oldest MacBook, that ships with OS X 10.4, has both out of the box.

Quicktime is a pretty fundamental part of the OS X media architecture, unlike on Windows, where it's simply a player.

What exactly are you having problems with?

If you have a MacBook, to check what version of OSX you are running, you just click the 'apple' at the top left of your screen and then click on 'about this Mac'.

I would suggest that you click on the 'apple' in the top left and click on 'Software update' and run it to ensure you have the latest updates. It will update everything, including iTunes and QuickTime if needed. If you are running Snow Leopard (OS 10.6), you do not need to update QuickTime at all.

When I click on itunes it says itunes requires quicktime.I downloaded an itunes.dmg file and then an error came up about segments or something.I wanted to ensure I am downloading the right file hence the os question.I thought itunes was inclusive of quicktime.

As far as I know, and I am an avid Mac user, iTunes for Mac OSX does not include QuickTime like the windows file does. That is because it should already be included in Mac OSX. However, be it that your OSX already has quicktime, it is most likely an outdated version and you are trying to update iTunes with an older version of QuickTime. I can't tell you for sure as I have never seen the error you are talking about.

But as I said previously, go the apple and run software update as that will tell you what software you need. You don't have to install everything, just check for the updates and only select QuickTime to install. You will save yourself a lot of heartache if you just run the software update. This isn't Windows where installing updates actually mess up your system sometimes. I have never had any problems when installing updates on a Mac, unlike Windows which either tends to bomb out, or become extremely slow and sluggish after some updates.

Just try it...

IceDrema is right... Just run Software Update and either update all or select the programs you want to update individually. You can also update iTunes IN iTunes... Just open the app, click on iTunes in the menu bar and select "Check for Updates"... Is there a reason you wanted to download iTunes as a .dmg file specifically?

You should be running OS X 10.6.5. iTunes is at 10.1.1 and QT at 10.0

That's just odd... Software Update works like a charm for me.
The only other suggestion I could make is to download and run AppFresh http://metaquark.de/appfresh/ AppFresh checks for and downloads updates for all your apps, including any Apple updates... It might work.
