I've never had a definitive answer to this?

ADSL line syncs, but I can't create a PPPoE connection?

Does anyone know what the cause could be? It was like the plague in 2006 and 2007, but only happened once or twice this year.

What's the cause?

Are you getting an error message when trying to establish the PPPoE connection?

Is your router running in bridge mode?

What are your line statistics?

Router's not in Bridge mode, but if I had it there I would be quite sure that the error would be "remote computer did not respond" which is usually the error after a Telscum rep asks me to put in Bridge mode, which I'm not about to do.

Line stats:
DMT Status Up
Operational Mode ADSL G.Dmt
Upstream 384 kbps
Downstream 4096 kbps
Noise Margin (Upstream) 9.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 7.5 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 10.5 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 20.5 db

System log:

PPPoE: Connection failed
PPPoE: Doing disconnect

Noise margins seem very low for such low attenuation - I have similar attenuation yet my noise margins are 25dB+ and 12db+, downstream and upstream respectively.

Do you have anything else connected to the phone line (via a filter or not)?

Have you monitored your line stats using something like Routerstats to see if it is unstable and drops to 0, resynchs a lot, etc?

Does your router/modem not indicate what the problem is when you cannot connect (e.g. "PAP Authentication failed" is an error I sometimes get)?

I had a similar problem with my Netgear router after resetting it. I can't remember the name of the setting, I think it's something to do with multiplexing. I think it's supposed to be set to LLC instead of the default. Once I did that, my connections worked.

I know this isn't much to go on, but if you can find a setting on your router config that has an LLC option, you might be able to resolve your problem. If you haven't come right by the time I get home, I'll have a look at my config and give a more detailed description.

Thanks orin, but I know where those settings are and they are properly configured.

My line "touch wood "never" loses sync and the system log posted above is the only "error" it gives, nothing about authentication.

I can't connect with either WebAfrica or TelkomSa.

To add:
Yes, I've got a phone connected to the line via filter, the ADSL line runs through a "surge protector" and there's a fax on the other line at the end of the house.

Basically, I won't blame this issue on any error from my side, it's a Telkom issue, but what's the cause is my question.

Fz1 or anyone on SAIX.

Could you please post the SAIX gateway address here and maybe your IP address?

I want to see if it connects if I specify it in my router and the fricken forum and google search suck!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you are reluctant to blame the issue on your setup, but I think the best way to troubleshoot this would be to:

1. Remove ALL devices from the line
2. Plug your modem directly into the wall, not via your protector
3. Move your modem to another extension of the line, see if that helps (maybe check the noise margins at each of the points on the line)
4. Try using a different cable (from your modem to the wall)
5. Can you borrow a modem from someone else and see if theirs works?

Sorry, I'm not at home right now so I can't give you any of those IP addresses. I'm going to see if I can connect remotely, but can't make any promises I will be able to get that info for you until I'm home...

At least you're trying Fz1, which helps.

I'll try your suggestions, but to be honest, I don't think it's going to make a difference since the line is syncing.

Hmm. Maybe if you know what exchange you are on, you can post a thread to ask if anyone else is on that exchange and is also having issues connecting. Maybe it's an exchange-wide problem? I guess if you do not know your exchange, you can post your area code and first three digits and see if anyone else is in the area... It's a long shot, but you may as well try :)

Another long shot was trying to configure the default gateway.... lol. I didn't even know my router had that capability, I'm going to play around a bit when it's connected again, I'll phone someone I know quickly who's got ADSL in my area and find out if theirs work ;)

Shot bro ;)

Made the phone call and it seems to be a problem in our town, so thanks for trying fz1, but I bet Telscum will reconnect us at 20:00 tonight :( Virgin Gprs sucks so bad :o

It's up and running again ;) Probably some maintenance or something ;)
