Democratic Alliance Gauteng leader Jack Bloom will run for premier in next year's elections, the party said on Monday.

He announced his candidacy at Constitution Hill, in Johannesburg.

"As premier of Gauteng, I will ensure real delivery, and a government that is accountable, effective, and free from corruption," Bloom said in a statement.

He said he would abolish blue light brigades, scrap e-tolls, and ensure that public money would not be spent on "extravagant cars and corporate credit cards".

"My vision for Gauteng is that no person is left behind or forgotten.

Opportunities should be created through education and innovation.

"Red tape should be slashed so that small businesses create jobs on a massive scale," Bloom said.

ANC Will keep Gauteng: Mantashe

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe says there is no chance the party will lose control of Gauteng in next year's elections, Eyewitness News reported on Monday.

He said the African National Congress was hard at work in the Democratic Alliance-led Western Cape, and did not foresee a change of governance in Gauteng.

Mantashe was speaking at a SA National Editors' Forum meeting in Johannesburg on Monday morning.

He said the ruling party was now in full election mode.

"We want to win convincingly, and we want to win everywhere."

Mantashe said elections were a time for the ANC to showcase its achievements as well as admit to problems.

"We can say many things, that it hasn't started yet, or we are still preparing, but my feeling in earnest is that election campaigns have started."

Pity the ANC has more problems than achievements. Oh yeah, and the elephant in the room .. a corrupt, above the law, president.
 
Premier Nomination ongoing

The Democratic Alliance's Gauteng premier candidate nomination process is still ongoing, the party said on Monday.

"The party's premier candidate nomination process was opened last week and will close on 1 August 2013," provincial chairman Mike Moriarty said in a statement.

"Nominees will face an electoral college on the 9th August 2013, after which an announcement will be made as regards the party's selected candidate."

The party had received one nomination thus far. Earlier, DA Gauteng leader Jack Bloom announced his candidacy at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg.

A Second DA man to vie for Gauteng Premier Candidacy

DA Gauteng leader Jack Bloom and party spokesman Mmusi Maimane will vie for selection as the party's preferred candidate for premier, it was announced on Wednesday.

"Coming from a background of business and the non-government sector, I know I can do the job," Maimane said on Wednesday in announcing his intention to stand, just a day after Bloom did the same.

"Speaking to the society about what it really needs is key," said Maimane.

He said people needed jobs, and there was also a need to help small businesses grow.

"There might be me and Bloom or a whole lot of other people too who join the race by midnight," he said.

Bloom said the Democratic Alliance was open regarding the nomination of candidates.

"This is how the DA does things... our process should be an example to other parties. May the best one win."

DA members had until midnight on Wednesday to submit their candidacy. The preferred candidate would be announced on August 9, said Bloom.

Another opportunity to see if the DA will choose political expediancy or live up to their policy of "fit for purpose" in their selection as it seems there is no voting system and the canidate is selected by some or other body in the DA. If it was democratic, Bloom would have it in the bag, he is after all the most experianced of the two.

He's very active in the community, too. Did that whole thing where he spends a night in a different township every month or something.
 
Would be great if he won but I doubt the ANC will lose Gauteng anytime soon.

Agreed. He'd probably be a far better Premier than Mokonyane but there's probably a better chance of Julius Malema being elected Mayor of Oranje than Bloom being Gauteng Premier.
 
ANC Detects 'Racial Fight' within DA

The DA's two Gauteng premier candidates indicated racial tension within the party, the ANC in the province said on Wednesday.

"The fact that the Democratic Alliance has two premier candidates is a distinctly inauspicious sign that the party is in a state of mess, confusion and leadership squabbles," African National Congress Gauteng chairman Dumisa Ntuli claimed.

He was responding to the news that the Democratic Alliance's Gauteng leader Jack Bloom and party spokesman Mmusi Maimane would vie for selection as the party's preferred candidate for premier.

"It is a clear indication that there are deeper fights taking place between blacks and whites because of greed, factional battles and rupture caused [by] lack of policies and identity. We know that the DA is a white party and always want to hides behind a façade of a black face."

Maimane dismissed Ntuli's comments as political rhetoric aimed at diverting public attention from the ANC's failings.

"They have no delivery record and are losing credibility. All they want to argue is race," he said.

Attempts to portray the DA as a white party contained the implication that the ANC was therefore a black party, Maimane said.

The focus on race issues showed the ANC had departed from the non-racial principles of its former president Albert Luthuli, he said.

I like Maimane's vision also. ;)
 
I see they went political expediancy and not experiance. Just like Trollip lost out, Bloom has too IMO.
