Fell in love with the looks of the Jaguar E-pace.

Second hand is not badly priced. I know maintenance and repairs are likely to be pricey but how bad is it and how reliable is the car?

Mmmmm.. Unreliable ICE cars could leave you stranded. Unreliable EV's can catch fire and burn you to a crisp. Would I trust that that Jaguar has suddenly become reliable?

In theory there is less that can go wrong though, but if there is anything it's likely a "non-economical" repair.

Wow they depreciate quite nicely (as a buyer I mean), didn't expect it to be quite that bad.

I've not heard any horror stories and I'm sure the battery warranty would transfer to a new owner so that concern isn't a biggie.

It's a lot of car and on the more useful side of electric in the SA context.

My bigger question would be what kind of use case do you have for it? Longer distance the chargers will be an issue. At home not so much or if you holiday less than 200km away.

The ones I am looking at are diesel, not electric unless I am massively confused.

Has anyone owned a jaguar?

e-pace and f-pace are normal ICE cars.
i-pace is electric.

Friend has the diesel model. Quite spacious, quiet and comfortable. Two faults have materialised in the pest 16 months. 1, The wiper speed selector switch stopped working first time he used it in that it would only do one speed. 2. Slightly more annoying was the rear tailgate closer. 8 times out of 10 the indicator light showed it still open. 3 sessions to fix this. Agents a bit snooty and seemed not to take him seriously

The plastic buttons, especially around the steering wheel are not high quality. He had a Honda CRV before and these are better

Aah my bad I read i-Pace.

E-pace being a rebranded Evoque I don’t know if I would. Depends om the age as they had plenty of gearbox issues early on.

Seems like a bad buy even though it looks great.

What would be a better buy for approx 400k second hand? Looking for a similar sized SUV that has a similar charm.

So I ended up buying the e-pace (2018 model)

Took a warranty with the dealer (not Jaguar) as jaguars warranty was double the price.

Jaguar does offer an extended service plan, next two services / 4 years. The price ain’t too bad. Should I take the service plan?

It’s a tranny car now.

Take the service plan, from ChatGPT:

Common Problems & Reliability

  • Reliability Rating: Around 94% in UK surveys, but…
  • Known issues include:
    • Infotainment system glitches (freezing, bugs)
    • Battery drain issues (especially if unused for a few days)
    • Timing chain stretch on 2.0L diesel engines (can lead to major engine damage)
    • DPF problems on diesel engines if used mainly for short trips
    • Sensor faults – false coolant or check engine warnings
    • Rear visibility is poor due to design (thick C-pillars)

  • Repair costs can be high, especially if out of warranty. Parts and service tend to be expensive compared to Japanese or Korean brands

✅ Pros and ❌ Cons

✅ Pros:

  • Sporty, premium styling (inside and out)
  • Engaging driving feel for a crossover
  • Lots of tech and driver aids
  • AWD standard across all models

❌ Cons:

  • Can ride harshly with 19”+ wheels
  • Some reliability issues, especially early builds
  • Expensive servicing and repairs
  • Rear seat and cargo space not as roomy as some rivals
💬 Verdict

The 2018 Jaguar E-Pace is a stylish, fun-to-drive premium compact SUV with solid features and great handling. It’s a good fit for someone who values brand appeal, driving dynamics, and tech, but it’s not the most reliable or practical option in its class.

If you’re considering buying one, check service history carefully, especially if it’s a diesel, and try to get one with a warranty or maintenance plan included.

From what I’ve heard, maintenance can be a bit expensive compared to regular SUVs, especially if it’s out of warranty. Reliability-wise, some people say it’s okay but not perfect; you might get some quirks here and there.
I believe so

Do service plans generally offer any more value than paying for a service as and when due ?
