Jail time promised for dangerous overtaking

Cape Town – Motorists caught overtaking on dangerous stretches of road will be arrested instead of being fined the usual R1500, warns Western Cape provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa.

Africa said it was unusual that 21 people died on provincial roads this weekend. The last time more than 10 people died on the roads over a weekend was between December 23 and 25 last year.

Of the six separate head-on collisions which occurred on Saturday and Sunday in Riviersonderend, Vredenburg, Ceres, Knysna, Rawsonville and N2 Dassiesfontein area near Caledon, eight drivers and eight passengers lost their lives.

So basically most, if not all, minibus taxi drivers need to be arrested.

While I agree with the sentiment, the thing about threats like this, as with previous threats to lock you up if you weren't carrying your license, etc etc, is that they actually have to comply with the law and in practice they probably won't just arrest people like this as they would be opening themselves up to unlawful arrest suits (unless the transgression was really very blatant and could be shown to be directly endangering lives).

Saw this twice on the way home. Just to get in front of me he overtakes and forces his car in front of mine, I had to brake or have an accident. I'm not easily angered so mostly I just get left confused as to why someone would do this.

I saw a pearler the other day. A fat, self-absorbed bitch in gucci sunglasses, driving a SUV while texting to her peasant brethren at the location over the next blind rise to roll out the piece of red carpet for her highness's return...
All this while driving directly into the late afternoon sun as she drifts completely into the oncoming lane. If she'd found that SUV on bricks upon leaving again for the big smoke, it would have been a blessing in disguise for her, as well as the rest of the population.

Especially when they change lanes inside an interchange without a care in world.

But yah, I have seen some dangerous overtaking on the N1/N2, especially when people are impatient with truckers and Sunday drivers.

Now if they can arrest the people that stop to offload people in the middle of intersections and esp those that use the taxi, erm I mean emergency lane as an extra lane so they can jump back into the normal lane after intersections, I would have not problems getting to work on time.
