Recently I visited my older brother and we played some COD MW3 on his Xbox. I asked him to give me a demo of COD Ghosts in order to see whether or not it is worth getting.
Unfortunately his Blu-Ray on his PS3 was not working so that sucked. But it got me thinking, should I consider putting CFW on my PS3 so that I can still use my one and only gaming device if the disc player is broken?

Is anyone still doing this? What is the latest CFW out there? Is this still illegal?

Any help will do.

Its illegal, ppl are still doing it, but then you must not access PSN at all or risk being console banned.
I jb mine, then reverted it back to normal so i could get onto PSN.Now its YLOD'ed.

You have several option:

1. The console is on Firmware version 3.55 or lower, and you can do a simple firmware upgrade to jailbreak it, this is highly unlikely as 3.55 is very old

2.a The console was once on 3.55 but got updated to higher FW version, you need to buy a hardware flasher (google E3 Flasher) and hand install it, then do a very complex set of procedures that will brick the console if you do them wrong, and downgrade the console to 3.55 to load the CFW

2.b You take it to some one pay a lot of money and have them downgrade it for you

3. Install a ODE (Optical drive emulation) kit, there are several, most can be installed DIY, there expensive but will let you play games from USB instead of from the disk, google this.

4.a Fix the console yourself by replacing the laser (very cheap) and there lots of youtube tutorials , you can get lasers from Aliexpress.com

4.b Take it to some one to get fixed, its expensive , but you get a guarantee.

Its only illegal if you use it for piracy, no precedence has ever been set in south Africa for jailbreaking a ps3.

I'm also in the same boat. My PS3 has been collecting dust for about two years now... Who would be able to fix/replace my BR drive in Durban? What ball park figure would I be looking at?

Its really easy to do it yourself and lasers cost Less than R350 on Ali-express.

If you have any one that travels to centurion I could fit it for you aswell.

BE very careful with replacement parts as the blu ray drives are not at all interchangeable even between similar models. The marrying cable is the problem.

It depends on the model ps3 you have there are several different models and as stated above there simply not interchangeable.

Please post the model number It normally starts with "CECxxxxx" and I will post a link to a working laser for your unit.
