A magnitude 5.0 earthquake, measuring an upper 5 on Japan’s shindo seismic intensity scale, struck northern Nagano Prefecture at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

There was no tsunami risk associated with the quake, the agency said. The epicenter was in the prefecture's northern area, striking at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The quake registered an upper 5 in the city of Omachi and a lower 5 in the city of Nagano. An intensity of 4 was recorded in the village of Ogawa, while it registered a 3 in the city of Matsumoto.

Another quake, this one registering a 3, hit in Omachi about two hours later around 3:30 p.m.

In neighboring Niigata Prefecture, no abnormalities were detected at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings said.

Authorities warned of similar quakes continuing to hit the area, urging residents to be vigilant.

Tsunami expected ‘immediately’ after powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake strikes Japan with 10ft waves barrelling in
AN ENORMOUS tsunami is expected to hit Japan immediately after the island nation was rocked by a huge 7.5-magnitude earthquake.

Waves of up to 10ft could crash into the north of the country in less than 15 minutes, Japan‘s Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned.
The tsunami was first sighted off the coast of Japan, around 31 miles away from the coast of Aomori.

So far the country has recorded a tsunami of just over 2ft.

Residents are warned to stay away from the coast as the huge waves barrel in.

Anyone driving near the the sea or estuaries has been told to immediately get to higher ground.

Tsunami warnings are at the second highest level of alert.

The worst waves are expected in Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido areas, the agency said.

It said: “Evacuate immediately from coastal regions and riverside areas to a safer place such as high ground or an evacuation building.

“Tsunami waves are expected to hit repeatedly. Do not leave safe ground until the warning is lifted.”

There were two M 4.x quakes off Alaska during this time, all along the Pacific plate.

Its sometimes interesting to have a look at the data and how active those areas actually are, when we live in a very seismically quiet part of the world.

Also, could this be the emergence of the Kaiju I wonder :P

Japan is very prone to quakes, and the magnitude scale is logarithmic, so this was a relatively small quake IMO. Nobody died AFAIK. Slow news day...

Japan’s Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara is giving an update and says residents should stay inland until tsunami warnings are lifted.

Around 100 households are without power, he says, and some bullet train services are currently on hold.
