Readers outside of Japan who are sick of poor service from their cellphone provider should probably look away now, lest they become enraged with jealousy at the news of Japan’s first next-gen mobile network, which goes live next month courtesy of NTT Docomo.

The dominant wireless operator in the country says it plans to open its Xi network (Xi should be pronounced "Crossy" according to Docomo) on Christmas Eve, speeding mobile downloads to up to 75Mbps.

This is LTE, not LTE Advanced, and therefore according to the ITU-T not 4G. But still - very very impressive.

Japan have always been leaders in mobile technology. They were the first networks with 3G for example.

Damn impressive. They always lead and others follow.

We should have this technology by about the time Japan invents 1TB/s Mobile :P

Why the pessimism? South-Africa has actually some great mobile networks. We have three 14.4mbps networks, and one 42mbps network, if I'm correct.

Now this is much better than some first world countries, like the UK. Our only problem is pricing, but with CellC this could change. I can almost guarantee you, in 2 years,

Vodacom/MTN will have a LTE network. (Ridiculous pricing expected)

No, S.A's networks only show as 14mbps on paper but really the average speed is maybe 1mbps on 14mbps network. I have been to the UK and their 1mbps network performs better than this so called 7.2mpbs network.

Plus we have crazy bw limits, we can't even enjoy these speeds from cell c when we have 5 gigs cap a month and terrible coverage but you are right...too many damn scams for us to really progress forward.
