With regard to Visas how did you do it considering you can't just apply in advance like other places like the US, also need to show booked flights + accomodation

I went before the evisa was introduced so went via the Embassy. Since late 2022, you can do the evisa. Heard from someone it takes five days. Japan is very by the book so I'd hazard a guess you probably need your flights booked but you can always call the embassy.

Always book accomodation for a day or two to be safe. You can book a refundable hostel on Booking.com . Backpacking is common in Japan so I'd be very surprised if they want you to have accomodation for your entire trip.

I see, so I would likely have to book my flights first and accommodation and apply for the Visa after if I want to book in advance
