Java Developer - How much should we be earning

So I saw a .net developer thread up and since I'm kind of pissed at my poor increase I would just like to know what other people are experiencing in the java market

Qualification:
BSc Computer Science + Honors @ UCT
Exp:
2 and half years working exp.
 
To use java everyday? What is your soul worth? ;)

20 - 30kpm depending on field and responsibility. Less if you're still in CT.

Is it so hard to search the um-teen-dozen IT job sites in South Africa for a similar position, work, experience, development language etc etc and just see what employers are offering?

It's not hard but nor is it relevant. Real experience from people in the field with related technologies is worth a lot more than random offers on job sites. Real data on what your peers are earning is invaluable.

Irrelevant was the wrong choice of word. Less relevant would have been better.

While job offer ranges are no doubt valuable insights into the market, they can and often do vary from what is actually paid after negotiations.

That seems a little bit on the high side, we pay our Java dev's with that amount of expierance between 15 and 25 depending on how good they are and the roles they fulfill. We do not reckong in degrees as it seems the market does not make a fuss about it.

It also depends what kind of Java experiance, there is a difference if you know JEE vs. Embedded programing of course. Much more easier to get work if you have a good JEE understanding

Edit: After looking at the acuals in my company the 20 - 30 is pretty much correct!

I could post my salary here, but it would be irrelavant as I have 10 years Java experiance. In my opinion if you search for jobs as a dev the posted job offer 90% of the time just say "negotianable" in the salary section or they post a ridiculas low amount

Do your .net developers get paid the same as the java developers?
 
thats quite high for the computer industry ! same as a 0 year experience CA ... still high though.
 
Because of the steep learning curve for JEE and the fact that most large financial institutions prefer Java I reckon the payment would be a bit higher than the equivalent developer web developer in other languages.
 
My last contract was 480K CTC PA. Senior Java developer. For short ones I ask 300 R/hour. For .NET I charge the same.

I am trying last two years to find some Symbian work before I forget what is that Symbian C++. It went out of fashion so quickly.
 
The problem with job offers on those sites are that they are extremely unrealistic. The actual salaries of people of similar qualifications and around the same working experience is way more valuable.

From the few good responses I got is that around 20-25k is expected. What this means is that I am being paid lower than average and this is a problem. By the end of this I will have 3 years exp. If I expect to get a 10% increase next year June I will still not be close to R20k meaning that I have to change jobs to be paid fairly.

That's the reality in the industry. Make an appointment with your manager and discuss the issue. That's what I did... :rolleyes:

You still have to say in what part of the Java world you have experience in
