Jazz - music that isn't !

Anyone here like this stuff ?

To me it seems like a cacophony of noise with people randomly playing instruments as, when & how they please.

What am I missing, or, is this it ?
 
Some of it I enjoy, others not. Love Louis Armstrong for example
 
Jazz requires you to read music and be able to play a musical instrument
The mainstream cr@p pumped out the last 20 years is a disgrace to the term MUSIC
 
Big band jazz is structured. The musicians must keep to the score. In a nightclub or a gig, the individual musician is freer (not completely free) to follow a melody of his own invention.

You can also say jazz originated in New Orleans around the beginning of the 20th century and subsequently developed through various increasingly complex styles, generally marked by intricate, propulsive rhythms, polyphonic ensemble playing, improvisatory, virtuosic solos, melodic freedom, and a harmonic idiom ranging from simple diatonicism through chromaticism to atonality.

Does that help you? Art Pepper was an excellent proponent of the above genre. Dave Brubeck explored alternative rythms but eventually came back to the traditional form

One of my good friends is a jazz drummer and has been playing since the mid 1950's. He can read music, but says that this is not a necessity, since 99% of what he plays are songs he has played before
 
I used to be like that, enjoying only vocal jazz. Then my brother said to me Jazz liberates you from the familiar 4 x 4 music format. I am not a musician to be able to describe to you what a 4 x 4 means but the best way I can tell is listen to the drummer and very quicky you realise that a lot of music that people are used to fits the bang bang bang bang of the drummer followed by another bang bang bang bang, after about 4 of those the song goes to bridge or chorus which is also a 4 by 4 thing before returning till the end of the song.

Jazz tends to liberate you from that, almost as though there isn't any timing at all but there is, u just need to discover it. It may be a 7 x 3 x 5 or a 8 x * x *. But u know they are in sync because they all still let the drummer 'lead' as it were and they all know when to stop.
