My friend is looking into buying a mid 90's Cherokee. I want to know if its a good and reliable car? She currently has Isuzu 320 Frontier but is having some problems with it.

As far as I know the Cherokee is somewhat thirsty? How does it compare to the 3.2 Isuzu?

I'm not sure about the exact year model.

Any opinions on the car will be appreciated.

CG, as far as I know, that 4.0L straight 6 is pretty bulletproof.

I own the 2000 Jeep WJ Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.0L I6 motor, my dad got it when they were new in the country, he ordered it in late 1999 and took delivery in 2000, it's been with us for 14years now, and was given to me as my 1st car in 2012.

What can I say? The 4.0L motor is one hell of a thing, still running beautifully as it did when it was new, the 4.0L i6 motors can take a lot of abuse but will treat you right if maintained properly. My dad did not miss a single service interval, and even now at 330,000km we take it once to twice a year to CCVS in Wynberg, they specialize in Jeeps, Land Rovers and other 4x4s and they always do a great job, I can't complain.

The one I own has a slightly newer 4.0l i6 motor than the 90s Cherokee (I'm guessing you're talking about the normal Cherokee not Grand?), but as far as I know the tweaks aren't hugely different. These Jeeps do guzzle a lot of petrol, especially when sitting on All Terrain tires, mine is currently doing 18.1l/100km, they are heavy machines, but also very tough and unbelievably comfortable and ease to drive.

I'd suggest she shop for a 2000 Grand Cherokee Limited, be it the 4.0 or 4.7 HO, they are very luxurious inside, heated seats, heated auto folding mirrors, auto adjusting rear view, 10 CD changer, sunroof, dual zone climate control, tons of storage space and they handle well, you can get them for a very good price, and if you get one that's been well taken care of she should get another good 10years out of it.

Thanks for replies.

I think the one that she can get now has reasonably low mileage, and a full service history. Also, she's paying a very reasonable price for it. The only worry will be the fuel economy as she mostly drives in city traffic.

But agree, I think it's a good car.
