Hi guys

One of the Company cars is for sale, 2010 Jetta 1.6 Trendline. Car has around 270k km.

However it has a FSH with VW. I have used the car previously a few years ago, it was fine.

They want around 50k for it. Only issue they say is that the Cat got clogged and was removed and this triggered the check engine light.

I think I can make some money flipping it.

How difficult and expensive would it be to bypass/override the Cat sensor? What else should I check before buying?

Thanks

buy a mini cat and or just map the error out.

MINI CAT - LAMBDA FOOLER - CAT FOOLER | RMS Performance

mini cat or lambda fooler is about R300 .Screw it in and fit your oem sensor.

Any performance shop and some exhaust places sell them

ooo yes google Revo. Then look for a shop near you. These revo maps are popular on vw. these performance shops will also have mini cats. Maybe they can just map it out, dunno where u are but here is a shop in jhb

I doubt a clogged cat is a very frequent thing to happen to these models, so best would be to get a hold of an OBDEleven or VCDS to scan for codes.

FWIW my A4 that was burning oil for probably the last 30k km also had a 'clogged cat' according to the PO and it ended up being perfectly fine when I removed it. Cats DO fail when unburnt fuel gets in there, so you could be looking at a faulty injector (budget around R8k for a set) or something along those lines.

But without a readout of the error codes, it may be a shot in the dark.

yeah, checking around for someone reputable to run a diagnostic scan on the vehicle. I will report back.

Maybe one of the vwclub members would be so kind as to let them scan the car for you. No idea how you will do this on a car that is probably stuck at work, though.

I know they have a registry of VCDS cables, perhaps someone is nearby? @Neuk_ , any other ideas? You are, in my mind, one of the VAG gurus on here.

I got permission to take the vehicle to check it up.

Clogged cats at high mileage is somewhat common, most simply remove the cat and have the O2/AFR sensor error deactivated so it doesn't give a CEL.

Where are you based @ronz91 ? And I presume it is the 1.6 TDi? I can't recall if they run both a cat and DPF or just a DPF.

1.6 petrol

Aah, no DPF then, I don't suppose you've tried a highway load run to try clear the cat?
the vehicle did regular long distance trips. also the cat has already been removed.
