Hi All

I am driving to Lesotho -Maseru tomorrow and want to know the best and quickest route. Any frequent travellers to lesotho here?

What is good website to get directions on?? Dont wana just leave it up to the Navman (Last time to mozambique it took me through some dingy squater camps)

Thanks

Easiest route for you would be N1 all the way to Bloem and then towards Ladybrand, but looks like it would be quicker to go Winburg > Marquard > Ladybrand

Those secondary Free State roads are decent, straight flat roads with no speed traps ;)

n1 ladybrand is the route i used, travelled there alot last year....
if u have never been u are going to be surprised, beautiful country really. And if u dont have roaming, watch ur vodacom signal die exactly as u cross the border...

Well, in the beginning of 2007 N1/Ladybrand route was in very good condition, so I think thats a safe bet and decently fast since you can go 120 most of the way.

N3 to Harrismith-N5 to Bethlehem - just outside of Harrismith grab a left on the R712 to Sterkfontein..go staight past Qwaqwa/Phuta through Golden Gate to Clarens . Grab another left at Clarence to Fouriesburg. At fouriesburg grab a left to the border post. Show your passport..or just smile and wave and they will think you have a 3 month ok to pass stamp...only one tar road through Lesotho...go through Butha Buthe remember to stick to 80km/h and 150 k's later you will be in Maseru
--road is 100% condition all the way to the border....--

280km to HSmith
150 to Fouriesburg
170 ish to Maseru

Thats the route i go from Durban, except i carry on and enter at Ficksburg, not the easiest route coming from JHB though

How long is the trip, time wise?

Some people say 3 hours, some 4 some 5 ???

mmmmm still not sure what is the quickest?

I also say go from JHB to winburg and then through to ladybrand via marquard.
Coming to bloem is a waste as it will be 3.5 hours here and then you head slightly north again towards the Maseru border at lady brand, just be aware of road works on the winburg road towards marquard as last time I was on it, about 4 months agi they were working on it and there were about 3 stop go's.

Its about 2.5-3 hours to winburg, and then say another 1.5 - 2 hours from there.
So bet on about 4-4.5 hours

Great scenic route although you don't have to go all the way to Harrismith to get to Bethlehem (unless you specifically want to go through the Golden Gate Reserve). You can take the 2nd Villiers offramp from the N3 and then stick to the R26 which will take you to Bethlehem and from there signs through the town will direct you to Fouriesburg.
The route through Golden Gate is definitely worth the extra hour or so if you have it.
Lesotho is beautiful ... Maseru a bit of a shthole though
