Does anyone have a list of tower numbers in JHB? With all the **** we've been having lately, I've also picked up problems after yesterday's disconnections. As a result, I've moved my grid antenna but would like to know which Tower I'm on now. Alternatively, can anyone confirm the following (Taken from the Google Earth file posted a while back...

102 - Morningside
82 - Mintech
27 - Primedia
12 - Hydepark
22 - Metro
60 - Woodmead

..here ya go (the last data I presume to be accurate):
Council Mineral Tec: 82
Fourways Exchange: 66
Bedfordview: 60
Northcliff: 60
Half Way Gardens: 36
Hyde Park: 12
Kempton Park: 82
Killarney Mall: 102
Randburg Metro: 22
Sentech Park: 126
Woodmead: 60
Helderkruin: 12
Linksfield: 110
Horizon View: 60
Hurleyvale: 50
Marlboro: 82
Sentech Tower: 116
Airport: 126
Rosebank: 90
Honey Hills: 50
Sandton City: 126
West Road South: 116
Aasvoelkop: 66

..I have to query that number 27- that I know of, that's not valid in the numbering scheme.

only even numbers?

..apparently, now that you mention it. But it's not something I've noticed before, nowadays I just follow the data I have programmed into my GPS (that I got from that file ;) )

The plot thinkens....

After yesterday's Radius problems my modem kept locking on to towers with poor signal. This morning I got up on the roof with my laptop and MySignal. The modem keeps logging on to tower 60 (Woodmead???). However, according to google-earth, Woodmead is 7.8km from me. My understanding is that you wont be able to log-on to a tower further than ±6km. Can anyone confirm what the current maximum "range" is?

For now I have awesome signal strength (40%) and SNL is 13 dBm!

My understanding is 5.9km is pretty much the official maximum range, and I've had it working out to that range (*with* an HGA of course!) ..that said, I've recently commissioned a job that connects at 6.33km- my new distance record.

..which reminds me: a li'l while ago I was on a job where the verdammte modem was locking onto Honey Hills from the Castle area of Kyalami, something like 25km -it SO didn't work!

Your modem will lock onto the strongest signal, regardless of the distance.
Modems can transmit upto 15 km, and receive upto 20 km and this is the main problem we have.
You have a tower only 3 kms away, but you are receiving a bounce signal from a tower 6 kms away, but being a bounce its actually 12 km and in this senario there is no way you are gonna logon.
This is the main reason we angled the Tower antenna's last year but still the problem exists in some places.
Therefore dont always look for the strongest signal.

Thanks for the replies guys... Turns out that "somehow" MySignal was reporting tower 60, but after calling Sentech, they tell me I'm connected to tower 66 (West Road South). This tower doesn't even appear in the Google Earth list!

Anyway, seems I have a rock-solid signal for now, so lots of happy users on my LAN!
