I was just searching to find more info in JINX (Johannesburg internet exchange) and I found this http://stats.jinx.net.za/ not sure if its been posted before

You can see the stats for all the different service providers. Interesting to see how much data Neotel is pulling already.

What kind of info were you looking for?

Remember that these graphs only shows the amount of traffic that goes between the ISPs at the exchange and doesn't have any relation to the total traffic that a particular ISP might carry.

That said... there are some changes happening that could significantly effect the amount of traffic that is going through the exchange. Keep an eye on the graphs and you might see massive rises in traffic ;)

I want to find out about the structure of the internet in SA.... purely for my own interest.

Like does JINX connect internationally or is it just for local traffic? Will SEACOM connect directly to JINX ?

JINX is an Internet eXchange Point similar to LINX in London, AMS-IX in Amsterdam or DE-CIX in Frankfurt. The IXP is used for peering or interconnecting different ISPs. This provides the shortest and cheapest path between ISPs for their local traffic. This is particularly important in South Africa so that (for example) a user on iBurst does not access a website on Internet Solutions network via the US. This would obviously make the latency much higher and cost both ISPs lots of international bandwidth. Instead they connect their networks together at the Internet Exchange for a fraction of the cost :)

Will SEACOM connect directly to JINX ?
Nope

So will it connect to SAIX or will the providers have to connect directly to the landing station.
If you have MEGA bucks then you can connect directly to the landing station and then lay fibre all the way to where you want to use it. :D

If you have MEGA bucks... (but not as much as above) then you can connect to the PoP in Midrand and lay fibre from there to where you need it.

SIAX don't really come into the equation ;)
