Back home...
So a bit more than month ago I asked for some advice with regards to possibly changing jobs.

My reasons were simple: Firstly, my wife is now starting pupilage next year and we will need the money, I approached my employer for a salary adjustment and haven't heard anything since. Secondly, I stated that I had an objection to some of the things that were happening at the company, this has just gotten progressively worse and my objection turned to absolute distaste towards the company.

Now, I haven't been idle since I last asked for advice either, been to a couple of agencies and then for interviews with a variety of companies. Three of which are now basically in the pipeline.

Company A has actually sent a calculation through to me indicating a salary package for the role, I went back to them and asked for a bit more to which they responded that they would review it in their budget process now in December. After this I received a mail from the person I went for the interview with just giving some general feedback on the interview and very contructive criticism. I assumed after receiving the mail though that I was no longer being evaluated for the position and left it that. I got a call yesterday though to confirm my availability for a second interview sometime this month.

Company B is one which I would love to work at, its part of a much larger organisation and operated internationally and there is considerable additional experience that I would gain if I moved to this company. The problem here however is that being such a large company they have a very strict HR policy and getting the HR people to find time for my second interview seems rather difficult. (Update: Second interview confirmed for tomorrow)

Company C is also an international organisation which approached me for a very similar role to which I currently have. Additional experience is very limited unfortunately. This company has been the most proactive of the three though to try and finalise the process and want to get everything done by the 15th of December.

Where I need advice:
I guess that my employer is starting to expect that I am looking for another job. I've been taking off more in the last while and ever before previously. In the forumites opinion, what would be the correct way to go forward? Do I tell them I'm looking for something else or just continue to use up my considerable amount of leave and keep my private life to myself?

Personally I've gone and ranked my preference from best to worst:
Pay: For far Company A is tops, I've given an indication to B and C but still have to negotiate.
Location: Company A is less travel time but a **** area, B and C are down the road from each other but I'll have to drive through Gillooley's every morning...
Experience: B, A, C
Feeling: B, C, A

Working through an agency make things difficult at times as I can not arrange things myself. The difficulty I am experiencing is that Company C is most likely going to push me for an answer before I know what is happening at B and A. I would not like to decline if I'm offered a position, but I don't want to accept before knowing what happens with company B. How do I approach this with the agency as its the same one.

Personally money should not be (mainly) driving you... if you would enjoy B more then I think it is better... because then you will work better and maybe even get a promotion/raise?

BTW, what is your line of work(if not to personal)

Money should only drive you if it is substantially more, i would rather hate my job and earn a kuk load than love my job and struggle :D.

I was in this situation about 3 weeks ago, a company offered me 80% more..
I am not "struggling", but i have debt and I definitely am not kicking ass...

I picked to stay where i am, its great experience and I am sure another offer like that will come along in the future.. The point is not to be completely blinded by cash, even if its a lot more than ur getting now...

Think if its possible another offer like that is likely, if so, and you are still growing where u currently are...then consider holding off..

of course, this just might be me trying to make myself feel better for turnign down what would be a decent house and an A3...

I'm in accounting and there is nothing personal about that :P

At this stage company A is sort of at the back of my mind, I'm not too comfortable with it but as I said the pay is a lot more, but not enough to make me go there if either of the other companies come back with at offer at my requested salary bracket.

The most difficult part at this stage though seems to be managing my current employer while juggling the prospective new employers.

Go for B. You can't fault both gut feeling and rational decision making.

Also don't tell your boss. They did not show the common decency of giving you feedback about the increase - instead they opted to keep quiet and hope the problem would go away.

I'm also in the position of having an offer on the table and other good companies wanting to interview me and my current job is very insecure.

Decisions, decisions.

Currently I'm not struggling either, I can provide for my wife and myself and should be able to next year as well with all the normal living expense increases. Once she can start billing her hours out we will actually be very well off.

Part of my problem at my current employer is that I also do not have anywhere to grow to, it would take one of my superiors either dying or leaving for me to move upwards any further and after that there is nowhere else to move.

If it was that there were still some growth opportunities I'd consider staying, but as I said its very very limited and I am not simply looking at other employers merely to try and force my current one to increase my salary. I don't believe in doing that at all, that why I approached my employers first.

Go with whatever makes you happy. The cash will follow. Make sure there is room for gaining experience...people turn depressive super fast in dead-end jobs.

Just don't burn any bridges until you are certain that you've got somewhere to go.

If those companies (B&C) are the ones I think they are then chances are high that the might finance some after hours studying too (Must be career relevant). If you do ask about this though...do so carefully.

As for company C pushing you re deadline: If the time frame until you get feedback on A & B is fairly short, then just stall. Tell them you need to think it over and that you need to make sure that the company is a good fit (The HR ppl love that phrase). Don't stall for more than 3 days. If they give you trouble just because of a 3 day stall then you don't want to be an employee there anyway.

If you are registered at a certain professional body you might also want to read up on their rules regarding job hunting. Some of them prevent you from approaching another (similar) company without informing your current employer.

I have been to a couple agencies and battle to get one interview.
My I ask which agencies you are using? PM me if you can.

I see on your profile your occupation is Financial Manager so I guess it must be a in demand skill.

Don't tell your current employer what you're doing. It'll put them on the defense and would (most probably) give you a hard time about it considering the things they let go in the company currently.

Your private life is yours and yours alone. That's why you get leave, so you can take a break. If they do ask you why you're taking so much leave you can tell them that you didn't want to say anything, but your wife have been to the hospital on more than one occasions. (Which is true, considering, during an average person's life time, they do make more than 1 stop at a hospital)

Just don't elaborate on it and lie out-rightly. They'll accept it's for personal issues and you can continue.

When you do get an offer, make sure it's in writing, both parties signed the offer and THEN quit. Don't quit or hand in your resignation before you have concrete paperwork backing up your new employment. Many of my friends have been burned like that before.

Strictly speaking I actually didn't contact any agencies directly or apply for any specific jobs. My main prot of call was www.careerjunction.co.za . I had previously uploaded my CV there and just updated it and set it as searchable again. Updating your CV takes it to the top of the list for people with your skills set.

After this I was contacted by a number of agencies, some of which were more than likely just fishing and hopeing they could place me somewhere, others that took a very proactive approach and actually contacted companies with the aim of advertising my CV.

So far most of my interviews have come via Network Finance, which is part of the Network Rectruitment group. The other agency was Top Search.
