HI all .. just a fairly quick question. Have a mate thats going for .NET programming jobs, he is at the point with one company that a deal is imminent, but they've slightly shifted the goalposts .. and he asked some advice.

He has been offered 22k pm Cost to company (pure dev role .. heres the spec .. bang the code .. no management or senior headaches) for a permanent position. Hes now been offered the possiblity of a 12 month contract aswell ... I basically told him that contractors normally earn a bit more that permanent coders, at which point he asked how much more ... thats where he lost me ..

So anyway, I am looking to pass on some pearls of wisdom, and I thought this as god a place as any to get some .. so my question is ...

1) Do Contract coders earn more than permanent staff .. and if so .. what sort of offer should he accept, bearing in mind that the original offer of 22k pm for permanent has already been made ??
 
Contractors do earn more, but only because there in no benefits (medical, pension) included in their package. Cost to company there shouldn't be such a big difference.
Much less security when going with a contract, I would go for the permanent position. Even if it's a little bit less.
 
A 12 month contract doesnt necessarily indicate that its a "contractor" position. Contractors are paid by the hour and can be fired at a moments notice. They also dont get any perks.

Thats very low. About R30k is more appropriate for this sort of experience. We developers need to stand together and demand better pay. It's not like writing good code, on time, is easy.
 
.NET is a popular language , so you will get less.
C++ could be different though.
 
Contractors generally get a good percentage more... and there's also the tax benefit.

Not where I used to work. They'd put you on contract for about 6-12months so they have a way out if you sucked. Also, they'd pay you quite a bit less that a permanent employee.
 
Thanks for the input guys, I also thought it was a little on the low side, but he is based in PE (or East London I can never remember) .. I was looking to see if there was a standard going rate that guys on contracts were looking at over and above what perm guys where getting .. but thx..

It appears that at the moment, there are a fair number of .NET guys looking for work, so I always advocate that a less than appealing salary is better than no salary, and if he's not happy, he should register with a few agents and keep his CV out there and see what pops up... then he can go back to the boss and say that he has a better offer, and they can match it or loose him, at least at that point, thy have a good idea of his ability and worth, and can make a better business decision
 
Fair enough, Eastern Cape is not a very rich province! I would say R30k to R40k depending on skill and area.
 
^^^ Way too high.

I doubt PE (and especially EL) would pay very well imo. Jhb and CT yeah, but the smaller places no.

As it has been said before many times here. Salaries is dependent on experience, area, skills, the company you are applying at, and and and and.....
So if you have 5 years solid experience in Java, or .Net (C#) and work for a big company, you can easily make R500k pa. I know quite a lot of guys that are earning R500k average.
Then again you can have the same experience and work for a smallish company in PE and earn R120k pa.

Speaking of which, I just got a call from this agency and they are complaining about a 20% increase of my salary - and I'm not earning a lot atm at all. They are suggesting something that is about 8% of my current salary. I told them to shove it.
