The poor don't pay for schooling, and now get free tablets to flog off on the weekends. The "matric requirement" hasn't been put there to get people with an education to work in a plantation - a monkey could probably do it. It's in place to weed out any unsavory applicants - the unfortunate irony is that it only attracted unsavory applicants, who then set fire to everything. And yes, I agree with the sentiment that this is a culture of entitlement: why bother working your arse off to get somewhere in life like most of the people in this country (black, white, indian, coloured, etc) when you can just sit on your arse with your hand out? The government they voted into power (how's that free washing machine and t-shirt working out for you now?) promised them ALL jobs, so I suppose it's expected that work will just magically appear.

You can image the frustration that builds up with these young adults - poor quality schools, no job prospects and not that much to do (in Ugie and Mclear - no offence). Our country has really let them down.

Also it is such a copout to blame government for your actions. They choose to burn and loot and destroy instead of changing their vote or engaging in peaceful process and dialog to resolve the issue.

Or hell, maybe they coyld have spent some time paying attention in class and learning something and getting 30% in the joke they call matric there days.

We can hardly blame a few separate acts of arson on a whole town who simply want to keep warm with their burning tires during their informal street party to show off their trendy dance moves. Obviously the news story leads with the burning forests, but these people have every right to table their grievances. Some are obviously more civil than others but I suppose the 10% rule applies here.

I know today's matric is easy but harping on the 30% of these days is a bit silly. 30% or rather 33.33% has always been a pass in SA's grade 12 even prior to 94. Yes I know this was a lowering from some higher figure in the 80s or before IIRC, but that 30% ain't new.

Code 7 (A Symbol): 80 - 100%
Code 6 (B Symbol): 70 - 79%
Code 5 (C Symbol): 60 - 69%
Code 4 (D Symbol): 50 - 59%
Code 3 (E Symbol): 40 - 49%
Code 2 (F Symbol): 35 - 39%
Code 1 (FF Symbol): 30 - 34%

The list is incomplete, I assume the above don't include the failing grades from G down to H.

I got an F(49%), I failed science. Based on your logic I should have passed which I did not. I had to do a rewrite in Jan, got high 60's & got my matric exemption in order to study further.

You have it slightly backward (and the numbers are wrong), but HG had a lower mark requirement for pass than SG. SG required 50% (I think). And if you got below a certain level in HG you got bumped down to SG and passed.
